IS there an author that is popular now that you discovered long before the rest of the world? Were you one of the firsst to read Patricia Cornwell and think "she's going to go places"? How about new authors you've read recently that you just know that are going to be all the rage in the next few years?

Well I wouldn't say I discovered him before the rest of the world did, but I remember after reading The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks thinking to myself that I can't wait until he comes out with a new book. I just knew that he would. Sure enough 2 years later he came out with Message In A Bottle

Years ago I read Elizabeth Berg's early small hardbacks, TALK BEFORE SLEEP and RANGE OF MOTION, and knew I wanted to read lots more by her.
I read "Edward of the Iron Shoes" - the first Sharon McCone book by Marcia Muller (1977); and "A is for Alibi" - the first of Sue Grafton's Kinsey Millhone books (1982) both when they first came out. I belonged to the Mystery Guild back then & they were the main selections. I also discovered Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum books when the first one came out. I think I discovered Earlene Fowler's Benni Harper series when there was only one or two out.

Waaaaaay back in the early 80s I was reading books by an author named Billie Douglas, and although they weren't wonderful and felt a tad amateurish, there was just something about the STYLE that I liked, so I kept reading her books.
Jump forward to the late 80s or maybe even early 90s and I started reading Barbara Delinsky and was hooked very quickly. BECAUSE....something felt very "familiar". Turns out Barbara Delinsky and Billie Douglas are one in the same, so without even knowing it, I was reading all her books for many years. They kept getting better and better - her old ones are nowhere NEAR as good, but be careful for the original publication date - her real oldies simply aren't up to snuff compared to her newer ones. Her style evolved into what it is now, and like a lot of newly hot authors, they simply slap a new picture on old books but use her NEW pen name, which I think is deceptive. But it DID teach me to check those publication dates and anything older than about 1988 I just don't buy.
