Flooded with Romance

Does it seem that the market is flooded with romance novels? At the supermarket Harlequin and Siloutte books dominate large rows of shelves. Quick little reads that give us an escape for a few hours. They must sell or they wouldn't publish them. But there are so many different types now. Which ones appeal to you or do you just want something a bit more substantial in your reading day?

While I did the gothic romance thing many years ago, I soon found them to be cookie-cutter stories that lacked much imagination. The publishers of these books give the writers a 'formula' that must be adhered to. Things like, 'must have sex by page 75'. While I do enjoy a good love story, I prefer the Nora Roberts-type book, if I'm going to read one. It isn't my favorite genre, but like I said, I do enjoy a good love story at times. Mostly I like a bit more substance in my reading. I'm picky enough to want good plot, great character development and words that flow together like poetry.
I haven't noticed the increase, but then I can be pretty focused sometimes, so that it isn't unusual for me not to notice something. I am one of those people who will be wandering along, deep in thought, and walk straight into a wall - LOL.
Romance books don't really interest me too much. Romance in other types of books is great, as long as it isn't too much of the story. I read some Nora Roberts, which was ok, but didn't really grab me.
If you enjoy romance, be it Harlequin / Sillouette (sp?), paranormal, or the Nora Roberts, LuAnn Rice style, you may want to check out www.paperbackswap.com
I'm surprised at the super popularity of romance novels posted -- maybe 50%?
Hi Maggie,
Years ago in my youth I loved romance novels but since life has reared it's ugly head to me I don't believe in "happy ever after". Hence I keep away from romance novels and books with pat endings!! Sue
