What's everyone reading this week?

I'm finishing my first Corson Hirschfeld, "Aloha, Mr. Lucky", set in Hawaii ... a wacky Carl Hiaasen-like comedy with native Hawaiian lore and traditions woven into the story.

After taking a break to read a book requested on PBS, I've returned to Barbara Kingsolver's The Poisonwood Bible...Here's the description from Amazon:

The year is 1959 and the place is the Belgian Congo. Nathan, a Baptist preacher, has come to spread the Word in a remote village reachable only by airplane. To say that he and his family are woefully unprepared would be an understatement: "We came from Bethlehem, Georgia, bearing Betty Crocker cake mixes into the jungle," says Leah, one of Nathan's daughters. But of course it isn't long before they discover that the tremendous humidity has rendered the mixes unusable, their clothes are unsuitable, and they've arrived in the middle of political upheaval as the Congolese seek to wrest independence from Belgium. In addition to poisonous snakes, dangerous animals, and the hostility of the villagers to Nathan's fiery take-no-prisoners brand of Christianity, there are also rebels in the jungle and the threat of war in the air. Could things get any worse?

In fact they can and they do.

I'm still reading The House of Sand and Fog. I'm about halfway through it. It's pretty good, I'm enjoying it, although I hate every single one of the characters! :) I guess at least I feel SOMETHING towards the characters in the book. Has anyone read anything else by Andre Dubus? Just wondering if it might be worth it to pick up another one of his books. I only have 4 more books in my "to read" pile and I'm going through them about one a week (I'm loving taking the train in to work!)

Anyway, I'm going to keep reading people's posts looking for more books to read. I forgot how addicting this can be!

I am reading Sugar Skull by Denise Hamilton. She is a former journalist for the Los Angeles Times. This is the second in her Eve Diamond series. What I like about the books is that they are set in the San Gabriel Valley where Eve works as a journalist for the L.A. Times. Since I used to live in that area, it's familiar to read about the cities and places because I can identify with them. And I think they're pretty well written too. I'm also still reading The Bear's Embrace - the true life story of a husband and wife who survived a grizzly mauling and how they deal with all the medical and mental issues afterwards. Gae

Oh, I loved this one! It's so cute!

Have you read anything else by Marian Keyes? I've read Watermelon, Rachel's Holiday, Sushi for Beginners, and Lucy Sullivan is Getting Married. Loved them all! ;)

I'm reading two books right now that I absolutely love!...Sarum by Edward Rutherfurd, and Zorro by Isabel Allende.

Ya know, it's tough reading two really good books at the same time! How to choose between the two? I've only got so many hours in the day! lol

I'm still working my way through Poisonwood Bible. I'm liking it and want to finish up and move on to something else. 500+ pages which is what kept me from it for so long. I just think of how

I read 'Poisonwood Bible' several years ago and I thought it was one of the best books I've ever read. Not best as in enjoyable, but it's hard to put down. I loved the way she wrote it from the viewpoint of each of the family members. Such a tragic experience for that family! I do think it was too long. It could have and should have ended much sooner.

Right now I'm in the middle of 'Lake Cottage', by Susan Wiggs. I haven't read anything of hers before and this is a nice summer beach read. I wish I could take it to the lake with me on Thurs, but I'll be finished by then. I guess I'll grab 'Summer's Child', by Luanne Rice. There is a bunch of books by Kristin Hannah that look good. I read one of hers 'Mystic Lake' a few years ago and I loved her writing style. I'm just in the mood for some light 'summer' reading.
