What's everyone reading this week?

I'm finishing my first Corson Hirschfeld, "Aloha, Mr. Lucky", set in Hawaii ... a wacky Carl Hiaasen-like comedy with native Hawaiian lore and traditions woven into the story.

Reading Stephen Cannell's new Shane Scully mystery "Cold Hit". Scully and two fellow police officers try to find out who's killing homeless Vietnam Vets and find the case involves the Russian mob and Homeland Security. The other book I'm reading is "This Dame For Hire" by Sandra Scoppottene. Set in 1943 NYC, Faye Quick finds herself running the P.I. agency after her boss goes off to war. Working as his secretary, though, they had done enough stakeouts that he feels comfortable leaving her to take care of business. In this book, Faye stumbles across the body of a murdered young woman. Four months later, the victim's parents hire Faye to find out who killed their daughter.

I finished "By Bread Alone" by Sarah-Kate Lynch the other day. Didn't like it as much as "Blessed are the Cheesemakers", but it was still good. Currently, I'm on the second of the Bast series, "Book of Moons" by Rosemary Edghill.

I just started The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck yesterday. I have *gasp* never read anything by Steinbeck, so I figured it was about time. He is only the most well-known author to come out of the central coast, afterall ;) That is where I grew up, so it seems like sacralige that I have never read any of his books.

"The Queen's Fool" by Philippa Gregory is wonderful, but I was wanting a little something different 1/2 way thru, so I'm reading "Bite", a short story collection featuring vampires.

So far it is really good. I am about a third of the way through - the Joads have just started out on their trek to California. I absolutely cannot imagine setting off like that into the unknown, riding in a jalopy with my entire family.
