Why does this author's name sound so familiar, yet I'm pretty sure I haven't read any of his books?

Just my 2 cents ... I just recently read one of his books "In The Dark" and it was the most disgusting thing I've ever read. I was thinking the whole time I was reading that it must be Stephen King writing under a different name but then I read that the author is from England and considered to be Europe's version of SKing. I was almost physically ill at one point - it was way too icky for me so I ended up speed reading to skip ahead to the end ... I wont be reading any more of his books.

I agree with you about Richard Laymon's books. I'd heard good things about him, so read "The Traveling Vampire Show". I found the sexual obsessions a bit much, but thought it was ok otherwise. Then later I tried "Midnights' Lair". This was even more disturbing. I decided that the suspense of his books, which I did enjoy, just didn't outweigh the skin-crawling creepiness.

A couple Laymon titles (One Rainy Night, for instance) contained sexual scenes & graphic violence that bothered me, too.
