I read it and enjoyed it but I had a hard time getting over the way the rich treated their children. It was scary! I felt really bad for the kids in that book.
I also felt horible for those children, especially knowing that that sort of thing happens a lot! I was sobbing for about a half hour while reading the end and after! I liked the book but hated how it ended. I felt no sense of closure and wanted Nanny to be able to see Grayer again and somehow make him feel better. At the end when he was screaming "NNNAAAAAAAAANNNNNYYYYYYYYY! I NEEEEEEEED YOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUU!" was when I started crying. what a heartwrencher!
I read it a couple years ago and really enjoyed it. I felt terrible for the kid and couldn't imagine anyone actually acting like those parents in real life. Amazing. It makes everyone I know seem downright normal - LOL.
It does remind me of when I was a kid and I always wanted to be rich - we weren't poor, but money was pretty tight sometimes. I thought money would solve all our problems. Then in high school a dated a guy whose parents were pretty wealthy. They owned 70+ acres of prime land in the hills, had a large custom-built house up there with a pool, plenty of toys like ATVs and stuff like that, took nice vacations, drove expensive cars, etc. These people were totally screwed up though. The whole family was really dysfunctional. I realized that I would rather have "modest means" and a loving, fairly functional family than a ton of money and be like them. Obviously having a ton o money and the loving functional family would be the best of both worlds - LOL - but I was pretty content with my lot in life.
Append to my last post. Although I did find it entertaining the other posts jogged my memory and I remember how the kids were treated. I didn't like that part of it, but the antics the writing style of the nanny was what I think I found amusing.
