An author from Colorado who immediately comes to mind is Kent Haruf (PLAINSONG, EVENTIDE).

Toni Morrison was born in Lorain, OH a formerly large steel mill town. That's about 10-15 minutes from where I live. She is celebrated by everyone from this area & there is a large street in Lorain named after her. I do know that her novel "Beloved" is set in Cinncinati which is far south of here. Much of the novel is about the underground railroad & it's effect on the lives of slaves. I'm sure she drew on this area for a novel in that time since we are close to Oberlin, OH. (Oberlin College in Oberlin was the first college to admit women). I believe it was there that headquarters for the underground railroad was located. I'm sure there are other authors but off hand I can't think of any. (So what else is new!)dee

As Mary said, CO is home to some wonderful authors. Some others include: Jon Krakauer (Into Thin Air, Under the Banner of Heaven), Diane Mott Davidson (her culinary mysteries are set in a fictional town based on the real town of Evergreen), John Shors (Beneath a Marble Sky) and Stephen White (his mysteries are set in Boulder with some action occurring in Denver).

Wow, I didn't realize Beloved took place in Cincinnati, Ohio. I read it years ago but think I would have remembered that because I loved the book and Toni Morrison. I grew up around Cincinnati myself. Reading primarily then Oxford for a few years.

I live in the town where Ray Bradbury was born in Illinois. He comes back often (at least once a year) to do readings/presentations at the local library. I have never been to see him though I'd really love to. He references the town in many of his books (including Fahrenheit 451) often mentioning the ravines and other landmarks. I have read many of his books and certainly did become more interested in his writing when I moved to his birthplace a few years ago. - Valerie

I have yet to read any of his work but Mark Spragg lives in Cody, Wyoming. The book I am most anxious to read and do have sitting on my shelf is An Unfinished Life which is about Wyoming. This book has also been optioned for a movie.

I use to live in Oklahoma and Billie Letts is a Sooner and I think all three of her books Where The Heart Is, Honk & Holler Opening Soon, and Shoot the Moon take place in Oklahoma. She really gives the feel of the area and the people of Oklahoma.

John Steinbeck is a local boy and a lot of his work is set on the California central coast where I grew up.

Robert Louis Stevenson spent some time in Monterey although he isn't from here. There is an historical house where he stayed called the Stevenson House which I have been too. It was actually owned by the Gonzales family, but the Stevenson name draws more visitors ;)

Of course Jack London is from around here as well. I have only read the Call of the Wild.

Brett Hart is another and of course John Muir.

I have been to a lot of areas that both Hart and Muir wrote about.

Believe me, I could be wrong, I usually am these days...LOL. However, I'm fairly certain it's Cincinati. Since you're originally from OH do you know of any other writers from this area? Nice to meet you. I'm new to the board. dee

Well Cincinnati makes sense. I can't think of any other Ohio authors off the top of my head. I'll have to think on it.

Nice to meet
