An author from Colorado who immediately comes to mind is Kent Haruf (PLAINSONG, EVENTIDE).
As Mary said, CO is home to some wonderful authors. Some others include: Jon Krakauer (Into Thin Air, Under the Banner of Heaven), Diane Mott Davidson (her culinary mysteries are set in a fictional town based on the real town of Evergreen), John Shors (Beneath a Marble Sky) and Stephen White (his mysteries are set in Boulder with some action occurring in Denver).
scrappy
Wow, I didn't realize Beloved took place in Cincinnati, Ohio. I read it years ago but think I would have remembered that because I loved the book and Toni Morrison. I grew up around Cincinnati myself. Reading primarily then Oxford for a few years.
Gretchen
I have yet to read any of his work but Mark Spragg lives in Cody, Wyoming. The book I am most anxious to read and do have sitting on my shelf is An Unfinished Life which is about Wyoming. This book has also been optioned for a movie.
I use to live in Oklahoma and Billie Letts is a Sooner and I think all three of her books Where The Heart Is, Honk & Holler Opening Soon, and Shoot the Moon take place in Oklahoma. She really gives the feel of the area and the people of Oklahoma.
John Steinbeck is a local boy and a lot of his work is set on the California central coast where I grew up.
Robert Louis Stevenson spent some time in Monterey although he isn't from here. There is an historical house where he stayed called the Stevenson House which I have been too. It was actually owned by the Gonzales family, but the Stevenson name draws more visitors ;)
Of course Jack London is from around here as well. I have only read the Call of the Wild.
Brett Hart is another and of course John Muir.
I have been to a lot of areas that both Hart and Muir wrote about.
I have Tess Gerritsen here in Camden and of course Stephen King in Bangor,
Edna St. Vincent Millay was born and lived in Camden and Rockland.
J.S. Borthwick is another mystery writer with Maine ties and settings.
The Beans of Egypt Maine by Carolyn Chute
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born and lived in Maine
Charlotte's Web by E.B. White was created while he lived in Maine
Cider House Rules is set in Maine
Lee Child's Persuader: The seventh Jack Reacher novel, set at Richard Beck's home in Abbot, Maine.
Catherine Coulter's Riptide takes place on the coast of Maine
Barbara Delinsky has several books set in MAine
Jude Deveraux's Summerhouse is set in MAine
even Nora Roberts has found the Maine coast in her book Homeport
Janet Evanovich's early romance Love Overboard is set in Camden, ME
Well Cincinnati makes sense. I can't think of any other Ohio authors off the top of my head. I'll have to think on it.
Nice to meet
