An October birthday for one of your favorite Vampire writers today

Happy Birthday to Howard Allen O'Brien

LOL you might know her better as Anne Rice author of the Vampire LeStat books such as Interview with a Vampire.

For more info try her website: http://www.annerice.com/fa_speaking_05.htm

Has anyone read any of her novels- "The Witching Hour" is on my list of to reads. Maybe this would be a good month for that...hmmm

I read all of her vampire novels in my early 20's and I really liked them. About 3 years ago I picked up one of her more recent titles and I just couldn't get thru it. I guess my tastes had changed. I have also read one of her non-vampire books _Feast of All Saints_. That was about free "people of color" in New Orleans during the 1800's. I really like that one. I don't think it had any supernatural stuff in it at all.

I've read ALL of her books. And my username came from "The Witching Hour" series!

I liked all her Vampire, Witch and Mummy books. But her other non-supernatural ones are good too.

"Cry to Heaven" is an historical novel in 18th century Italy, singing, castrati...

"Belinda" is Lolita-esque

"Violin" was difficult for me to get into at first, but I was able to get into it when I picked it up the 2nd time. It had a lot to do with music.. I imagine Anne was hearing and listening to lots of music when she wrote this. There's a ghost in it.

I have also read the "Sleeping Beauty" series. Not for the light hearted or.. hmm.. "innocent"? .

"Exit to Eden" was made into a silly and light hearted movie.. the book is a bit more "serious".

And more.. If you can tell.. I really love her books. Heheeh.

I read the first three vampire LeStat novels by Rice and then got tired of the character. The Mayfair Witch series didn't appeal to me at all. I actually think my favorite book by Rice was The Mummy. I was disappointed she didn't write another one or two of those, as the ending of the first certainly left the door open for a sequel.

Along with Rice's Mummy, I preferred her sister Alice Borchardt's werewolf novels (of which Silver Wolf was one.)

Vampire-wise, I prefer Chelsea Quinn Yarbro's Saint Germain, PN Elrod's Jack Fleming, Mercedes Lackey's Andre in the Diana Tregarde novels, Tanya Huff's Harry Fitzroy and Victory Nelson in her Blood series, and Octavia Butler's The Fledgling to Rice's LeStat.

I really enjoyed the Vampire Chronicles. I actually still need to read more of the later ones. I believe the last one I read in the series was Memnoch the Devil. I also read the Witching Hour series, which I enjoyed too. Haven't finished that series either. Both very good and you will enjoy the Witching Hour series. Gae

I have read most of Anne Rice's books and the Witching Hour is one of my favorites.

When my husband and I went to New Orleans, we walked by Anne Rice's house - which she has since sold, wouldn't I have loved to buy that place :) The house plays a large role in the Witching Hour.

Maybe I will re-read that book for Halloween.

I've read all of the vampire ones now (just finished the last of them earlier this year), and a few of the others, too, but none that were about the Mayfair witches (except when they were mentioned in the Vampire Chronicles)

I really liked Interview with a Vampire and thought The Vampire Lestat was pretty good, but the rest of the series didn't grab me.

Kim Newman has written three vampire books, all of which posit an alternative world where Dracula holds power and has created millions of new vampires. I liked all three of those.

Of course, Dracula is a classic.
