Don't have any books in the Book Cemetery yet. I'd never throw one out. *GASP* I'd pack it away or something or let my husband get rid of it with out me knowing. lol

If is has been destroyed due to water damage or something, I will toss it. Otherwise I generally drop them off at the thrift store, library, or someplace. I don't think I have ever thrown out a book that was still legable.

I've thrown away tons of books, well maybe not tons, but a lot. As a librarian, weeding is a very important part of the job. We weeded a good portion of our history section last year. Here's a pretty standard weeding criteria achronym that we use MUSTY :

M Misleading and/or factually inaccurate

U Ugly-worn, and beyond mending or rebinding

S Superseded by a truly NEW edition or by a much better book

T Trivial-of no discernible literary or scientific value

Y Your collection has no use for this material, irrelevant to the needs of your clientele

I've weeded some pretty funny stuff in the libraries I have worked in. I weeded titles like _Mary Smith, girl nurse_. They were a whole series of career girl books from the 50's that I weeded from another school I used to work in. I also weeded a book that was published in the 60's that said by the 90's men would no longer wear suits and a book from the 50's that talked about when we might land on the moon.

When I worked in the public library I weeded the pamphlet file that had not been weeded in eons. I found pamphlets on computers from the 60's, when computers took up entire rooms and a pamphlet on how to make things from scrap wood printed during the Depression. This stuff is fascinating but it has no place on the shelves. A poorly weeded library is not user friendly and there are some librarians who hate to weed. I kinda like it myself.

I've only ever thrown away one book in my life; usually I donate them to libraries or resell them to used bookstores in exchange for store credit if I don't like them, or if I absolutely have to winnow out my collection. And if my kids HAVE to get new textbooks for a class instead of used, then THOSE

Teri,

I've never actually thrown a book away (my heart thumps at the very thought) and I am contemplating weeding through my booshelves at the moment.

There have only been a couple of books I've had to throw away, and that was because they were badly damaged.
