Series Authors?

OK.. DH has given me the OK to spend a good bit of money on books when we get our tax refund back early next year.. SOOO.. I thought I'd ask you ladies if you know of any really good series authors(kinda like Rowling did with the HP series) I already have a bunch of Stephen King(and all his alias names) and Dean Koontz, V.C. Andrews, and Anne Rice(and of course Rowling)

Are there any other "series" authors out there that are really good reads, and keep you wanting the next book in the series?(I know with the HP books I was flat out MAD that she was taking so long to release them one by one..lol that to me is a sign of a great author and good books that keep you entranced.) I'm hoping to find more books that will keep me entertained for a long while.. because I read so fast(hence why I'm wanting series books) For example, DH *just* bought me all the HP books about 2 weeks ago, and I'm finished with all of them except Half Blood Prince(only one we didn't buy because its not on paperback yet)..thats 6 books, in less than 2 weeks (all while dealing with a 2yr old and a newborn mind you..lol multi-tasking rocks!) and the last couple of the HP books were fairly thick.. around 800 pages in paperback. So.. I need some names to look for!! Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

(oh...as a sideline, I don't like non-fictional books most of the time.. and definitely no self-helps etc.. strictly fictional for me..I use books as an escape into another world..so nonfics just don't work well with me..lol)

Welcome Crystal. You must be in paradise. We could all dream of more funds for book shopping. Baased on the list you gave me I would recommend Laurell K. Hamilton. I have read her Merry Gentry series(there are 4 at this time and like you I wait eagerly for the next one) I have not read her Anita Blake series(vampires) but my husband has enjoyed her and I think others here at the board have also. http://www.laurellkhamilton.org/

You might also enjoy Piers Anthony's
INCARNATIONS OF IMMORTALITY Series
On a Pale Horse
Bearing an Hourglass
With a Tangled Skein
Wielding a Red Sword
Being a Green Mother
For Love of Evil
And Eternity

If you are looking for an author without reacurring characters I would try Barbara Michaels who does supernatural books that I absolutely enjoy.

Enjoy and let us know who you found- who knows we might find a new author to enjoy with you

Debbie Macombers Cedar Cove series is good. There are only 5 at the moment and the new one always comes out the beginning of September. She only releases them in paperback so I always buy the next one immediately.
Janet Evanovichs Plum series is really good. I read all 11 in about 3 weeks. I just love Bob.
That's all I can think of for now. Plum is really good for laughing.

If you like mysteries, you might consider books by Nevada Barr. She has 13 books with the character Anna Pigeon, who is a National Park Ranger that solves crimes. I've read only one of the books. Mysteries aren't my thing, but it was entertaining.
A series, albeit, a short one, that I've read and liked, is the Big Stone Gap trilogy by Adriana Trigiani. It's about an Italian American woman living in the deep South.

My favorite series of all time:

Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next series
Terry Pratchett's Discworld series

If you love fantasy and humor, Pratchett and Fforde are both awesome!

Have you tried Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series? I loved it. So far it's 6 books (5 are available in PB) and all are 800+ pages. They are classified as a romance but don't let that put you off if you don't normally read romance! They are much more than that.

Also, another epic story is The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. It is about the King Arthur legend told from the female perspective. If you like it (which I'm guessing you might because you like Anne Rice and Harry Potter) there are several prequils but you do not have to read them to enjoy Mists (they were released after Mists but cover stories that take place prior to Mists).

A good mystery series is Sue Grafton's alphabet series - I think she's up to "S" now. I will also recommend Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next series - It is really funny! -Valerie

Well, if you would like a challenge, try to find the Lymond Chronicles series by Dorothy Dunnett. "The Game of Kings" is the first one: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0679777431/ref=pd_ser_asin_1/002-5142471-7865600?v=glance&s=books

They are historical novels set in 16th Century Scotland. The first one takes a while to get into, but if you can get thru it, you'll be hooked. But beware - she puts her characters thru major trials & tribulations.

For Mysteries, the Lincoln Rhyme/Amelia Sachs books by Jeffrey Deaver are good. And anything by Robert B. Parker - his Spenser series is the best, but his Jess Stone & Sunny Randall series are good too. Iris Johansen writes interconnecting books - there are 3-4 groups of characters that she writes about, but the characters also show up in each others books, but in a minor role. Elizabeth George's Lynley/Havers books are good. Also, Anne Perry's William Monk & her Thomas Pitt series are good Victorian mysteries. Elizabeth Peter's Amelia Peabody books about a Victorian Egyptologist are fun. And Jacqueline Winspear writes about a female detective, Maisie Dobbs in the 1920's.

I too have to put in a vote for Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum books. Whenever I need a good giggle, I know it's time to pick one up.

There are just so many more good ones. As you can probably tell from the above, I prefer mysteries, and am also a fast reader. Feel free to email me if you want any more suggestions, at least for mystery series. If you're interested in mysteries, a good site to check out is "Stop You're Killing Me". You can look up specific authors or characters & find all the books in their series - in order. You can also just go into a letter under characters & read the character descriptions to find ones that sound appealing to you, then look at the detail page. http://www.stopyourekillingme.com/index.html

Well, several of my favorite authors have already been mentioned, but I see not even Teri mentioned "The World's Greatest Detective" Elvis Cole by Robert Crais. A really enjoyable series. You may also like the Irene Kelly series by Jan Burke. Gae
