Lord of the Flies was required reading when I was in high school (freshman year I believe). That was 13 years ago, though (sheesh, am I that old already!). I probably would have liked the book better if we hadn't analyzed it to death. They spent forever talking about Simon as the Christ figure (maybe that was what the author meant, I don't know) but it was talked to death and really ruined the whole book for me. Maybe that's why I can't stand Shakespeare either. I like reading a book for enjoyment and can't stand dissecting it into a million little pieces and trying to figure out what hidden messages the author was implying.

I also had to read it for school back in my Freshman or Sophmore class. I also agree that sometimes we analyze things to the point where they become less enjoyable.

I have noticed a trend at the bookstore lately that classics are making a come back. One woman came in and had a whole pile of them she was getting her son for Christmas! And it's not just young kids- I think a lot of adults are trying to catch up on some of the ones they might have missed. And if you've notice Hollywood seems to be promoting lots of classics with it's choice in movies.

It is required reading in high schools :) I think its one book that everyone I know, even the ones that hate to read have read. Plus, it is a fairly decent book !

As others have said it is often required reading in HS. In fact my dd who is a sophmore is about to start reading it in her English class.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates the dissections. My husband was an English major in college and he hated tearing books apart as well. We were talking about Heart of Darkness last night and how that book was talked to death for both of us. Neither one of us was particularly fond of the book in the first place, but having it rehashed over and over was pure torture!
