Once a book hits the "nah, this isn't for me" section of my brain, that's it!

i very rarely quit a book and when i do i cheat and speed read to the end so i still end up kind of reading it because i always have to know how it goes and how it ends. The last time i did this was with a book by Linda Howard - i bought it because i liked the cover picture and the back cover writeup but i didnt like her writing style.

my problem is picking up a book in the first place and why i procrastinate on some books in my TBR pile. For example - i put off reading "The Kite Runner" for a very long time because i didnt think a book on Afghanistan would interest me but it turned out to be one of the best stories i'd ever read. And just now i picked up "Drowning Ruth" after a very long time collecting dust in my TBR pile because its an Oprah book club selection and i havent liked many of her choices ... but i started reading it yesterday and i'm almost done already - very good writing :)

Usually I won't pick back up a book that didn't interest me.The last one i quit reading was Velocity,it just was not my cup of tea.I went on to a different book of his that i had sitting here.I like this one much better.

Linda Fairsteins' The Bone Vault. I just can't stick with it. I try and try about once every couple of months and always put it back on the to be read shelve. My kids and their friends know the cover art work well enough to tease me when the see it in my hands!

It really depends for me. Sometimes I will give it another try, but often I just let it go. The last book I put down and walked away from was "If Chins Could Talk" by Bruce Campbell. I think he's very funny and have seen quite a few of his B movies (not to mention I liked him on Ellen when that was on), but his book was geared much more towards men than women. I just couldn't relate to a lot of what he was talking about. My husband absolutely loved the book, but then he's a guy. I will usually try to finish a book even if I'm not fully enjoying it. I guess I'm just stubborn that way.

I usally read though most of the book before I give up on it and then I figure I've come this far why not just finish so I rarely put a book down and just walk away. I am really picky about the books I pick up so I am usually pretty sure I'll like something before I even decide to put it on my TBR pile.

It's been so long though since I decided against reading a book part way through that I can't remember the name even. I only read like one chapter and returned it to the library. I do remember the foul language was HORRIBLE like every other word. And it really distracted me from the story and characters. I have no problem with language if it builds the story or character, but it was way over done in that book. And once the book was out of sight apparently it was out of mind so I've even forgotten the name, but if I picked it up again I'd know it the minute I cracked it open.

I might try it again once more after awhile, but no more than once and not many get a second chance.

The last book I gave up on was Loop Group.

I've actually done this 3 times so far this year. I don't think it's the books, however, I think it's me. Just too much life going on and if it requires too much of my attention to maintain the plot line and characters right now I get lost.

I always try to pick up a book again. I had tried to read More Than You Know by Beth Gutcheon several times and once I finally got it read I had really enjoyed it. So that changed my perspective and I always give a book another try. I would have hated missing More Than You Know so I'm sure there are others out there that I'll feel the same way about.

Hey Gretchen ~

How are you doing as far as the reading slump you mentioned recently?

Think I'm coming out of my slump. I'd really like to read right now but have too much work to do. :oP I'm working on a light book right now and The Sequined Love Nun or whatever that is called is next. Your book ring. So hopefully I'll be back in the swing of things soon.
