DiVinci Code - Appropriate Age?

My 15 1/2 year old son would like to start reading the DiVinci Code... I have had no desire to read the book so I wanted to see what some of you who have read it think about its appropriateness for a teenager?

It has been a little while since I've read it. I don't recall a lot of bad language. I believe there is a little bit of sexual content but not much and it doesn't play a huge roll in the book. Most of the book is political intrigue and finding the clues to the puzzle.

Hope that helps a little

I am a high school librarian and we have it on the shelves here. Whether or not you feel it is appropriate is between you and your son. As Maggie said, there is a sex scene in the book. It's an orgy and it's pretty yukky, but it's only one scene.

I think the book is kind of hard to follow and you have a better understanding of it if you are familiar with Church teachings. Does your son like adult books? I think this book appeals to more mature or sophisticated kids. It doesn't cirulate a lot in my library.

From another aspect - if you are a Christian, the line between fact and fiction seems really blurred through this book (which is of course what's led to all of the controversy). That might be a big thing in chosing whether or not to let him read it. It would be my biggest concern if it were my son:)

Thanks everyone for your input.

He wants to read it because a few of his friends have read it.

The first thing I said to him was that I want him to realize that it is FICTION. That it is based on stories and legends and ideas from the past but that doesn't mean it is truth.

Ooo.. great idea... I should let Jayde pick a book for us both to read so we can discuss.

Hi Paula and everyone
I hope it's OK to put my 2 cents worth. Your CL Teri left a post on the board that I use most - 50 and up - and, being a compulsive reader, I came along to have a look.
I'll introduce myself a little first - I'm Jenni, 66, from Perth, Western Australia - one of two Australians on the other board. I share the house with my grandson and have for the past 2 years - he is almost 21 now. We read a lot of the same books and discuss them. When I read the DaVinci Code, over 18 months ago, I was so impressed and enjoyed it so much, that he went on a marathon read and devoured it whole in 8 hours straight! He has such a good memory for books and can recall any that he has read. I'm not as good, but I can certainly discuss them.
It sounds as though your son would enjoy it. It is very complex and some bits may be difficult for him to understand, but let him know that you are ready for any questions. My grandson had quite a few and it did not mean that I needed to have read the book. It may be fun for you both.
Cheers
Jenni
