This is a cute little project that might be a good first quilting project for someone who is overwhelmed by the idea of making a full-size quilt.

That would also make a lovely oven mitt (well, not a mitt, whatever the other kind is called :-), if you add some extra batting to make it more heat resistant.

I think you mean pot holder? It would also make a nice "hot pad" to use to protect a table top from hot items.

There is a kind of batting on the market now with a special middle layer made especially for making things like oven mits and hot pads... Warm calls ir "Insul-Bright"
http://www.warmcompany.com/ibpage.html while James Thomson & Co call it "Therma Flec"
http://www.quiltersresource.com/productview.jsp?&EQ_class1=Fabrics%2FFusibles&EQ_class2=Therma+Heat+Resistant&sort=salesqty&sortdir=desc

and at the bottom of this page
http://www.beaconfabric.com/vindex.html?cat210.htm
there are two kinds of fabric which are heat resistant can could be used as a backing in lieu of the special batting. One already has cotton batting as a part of it...

Yup, pot holder is the word :-)

And thanks for the link to the insulated batting... I sense an idea forming in my brain ;-)
