Beginning Sewing Classes Suggestions

Hello I am new here to this board. I will be starting to teach sewing classes at Michael's in August and I thought I would start with making pillows first and then maybe book bags and gradually advance. I thought for the pillows we would do hand sewing first and then advance to machine sewing and gradually the projects would get harder. Does anyone have any other suggestions for this or what do you think?

All help and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

My sewing teacher has absolute beginners practice on paper with no thread, until they get the hang of sewing over shapes that she's made on them. Straight lines, circles, and the like.

Also, if your students are overwhelmed at any point, remind them to say to their project, "Without me, you are NOTHING but a pile of fabric!". It gave me the courage I needed to cut out some expensive cloth.

Good luck!!
