That is basically the way I have gathered all my life. Except that I sew two parallel rows of the gathering stitches about 1/4 inch apart and pull them both at one time. It just makes the gathered part lie nicer and makes it easier to stitch it down smoothly. And you want to adjust your top tension just a tiny bit looser and then do the pulling on the bobbin threads. Even if you don't change your tension it is still easier to gather with the bobbin threads for some reason.

This is also how I've been doing gathers my entire sewing time. And I've gotten PLENTY of practice with gathers this week making a skirt with 5 tiers that had to be gathered and attached. OMG it too me soooo long to do it! Especially the last tier since it was so big. Maybe I pin too much, but I like to put pins in every 1/2 inch or so to make sure everything stays put when I sew. My arms actually ache today in places I never knew I had muscles just from doing all of the pinning on the last two tiers yesterday! I may never
