I am sure you are going to get tons of blankets so unless you want one you make yourself, skip that for now.
Since the baby is due in July, it is kinda warm then so you might want to try lighter weight yarns. I have an April little one and I know I used a lot of booties but not so much the hats.
You might want to try your hand at a 6 month plus sweater for the fall/winter. I also saw that the lion brand web site had some patterns for onesies and VERY cute hats for the winter (when the baby is a bit older)
Do you sew? Maybe you'd like to try your hand at making your own sling (not sure if you are playing to use one) My handmade slings are my favorites out of all of them (knitting one is NOT recommended btw)
No suggestions, but you've gotten plenty of great thoughts. I like the idea of making booties for your lil one. If you like, make one blanket for yourself. I suspect friends will think "oh she knits, she'll be making plenty of her own blankets". Maybe you can make your own slipper socks for the hospital stay?
I've been lurking here for about a week or so. In that time I've also caught some of your posts on the cloth diaper board. If that's something you're interested in you could always use your wool yarn to knit a few soakers for your baby to go over the cloth. :) There are tons of free patterns out there for knitting and crocheting. Most are very easy and knit up quickly. Be careful though, soakers are addicting. I taught myself to knit two years ago so I could make soakers. :)
