Where's the best place to purchase crochet hooks? I've been looking on ebay but feel like after paying for shipping, the hooks become pretty expensive. Also, is it neccessary to use an afghan hook to make an afghan?

I have bought most of my crochet hooks at either Michael's or Hobby Lobby. If there is a Hobby Lobby near you right now all of their crochet and knitting supplies are 1/2 off (http://www.hobbylobby.com/site3/weekly/specials/specials.cfm). With a 40% off coupon at Michael's they are a very good price also. I suggest buying a set of needles so that you have the flexibility of selecting any pattern you like. I prefer Aluminum Boye brand, http://www.michaels.com/art/online/displayProductPage?productNum=nw0047, over the plastic LionBrand hooks, but I have both. I usually bring the plastic ones when I travel so I don't have any issues with security.

As for your other question. To make an afghan aka blanket, you do not need a special afghan needle. There is a stitch called an afghan stitch in Tunisian crochet that is sort of like knitting, but on one needle. I've never done this. I would say most, if not all crochet afghan patterns just require a regular crochet hook.

Hope this helps.
