Knitting..what was I thinking!!

Ok, so I figured I'd do a test run on a little wool yarn before I cast on during the opening ceremonies. Well, I'm thinking I'll need to go down a few sizes on the needles. the pattern calls for a 10.5 and they seem huge!

My question is, when you are planning on felting a piece after you knit it, is it normally a looser knit or should it be tight? Should I just go with what the patterns calls for in needle size? I'm using a different brand of yarn so I don't know if that's what's causing it to be so loose. My wool is more like a sport weight yarn but it is 4 ply. Here is the pattern I'm doing http://www.blacksheepbags.com/booga_bag.html

Thanks Heather! I'll stick to the pattern and let you know how it turns out. I have to get some 10.5 double pointed needles to make the I-cord, I think that's going to be one of the most difficult parts! ;)

I still don't understand what felting is? Do you use special chemicals to make it shrink?

You know how you can't wash a wool sweater because it will shrink?

Its because of the wool fibers.

Ohhhhhhhh...that's really cool. I didn't know you can't wash a wool sweater. So do you just dry clean it? Can you tell I live in a very warm weather location? I don't even think I own a wool anything.

JJ...still working on my new year's resolution to learn to knit, maybe I should start by buying some knitting needles.

I've always washed my wool in cold water by hand and then lay flat to dry...never thought about dry cleaning :)

(go get those needles LOL)

You'll be surprised at how ridiculously easy an I-cord is to do once you start it, trust me!
