making your own pattern for baby afghan

Has anybody designed their own afghan pattern? I have not found one I like for my next baby afghan project. I have yarn, it's baby pink and lime green (expectant mom's color's)

I was thinking of trying to do my own pattern like a big initial or some abstract art. Does anybody have any pointers or suggestions?

Thanks!

I like the big initial idea. I've never done it, but a good friend of mine did something similar. She created a huge heart on an afghan using popcorn stitches and double crochets. She drew out the plan on graph paper and just counted the number of double crochets to popcorn stitches to create a heart. I think doing an initial would be really cute and you can make the letter lime green and the body pink or vice versa.

I can't wait to see pictures!

That sounds great! I found another idea but I like the idea of the popcorn better. Here is one I found online:

I can use their graphs to help make my own pattern. They are naming the baby Elizabeth so I could do her name on the afghan. I just worry they might change their minds at the last minute lol.

Thanks for the suggestion!

That pattern is very pretty and sweet. I can't wait to see what you come up with.

P.S. Is it possible that they think it's a girl and it's actually a boy?

I've just done the basic square baby "blanket/afghan"-haven't gotten too decorative yet LOL....I made a pink and blue one for my girlfriend and am currently working on a green and yellow one for dh's coworker.

She seems fairly certain that it's a girl, I hope she's right! lol I know I really felt lke I was having a girl when I was pregnant with Paige and they said 95% that it was a girl so I went with it. Thankfully she came out a she ;)

That is really cute looking, I love the edging. :) I'll have to file it away as a good pattern to use up scraps. I can do off white as the main and different solid colors as the stripes. I'm still working on my yarn stash but I've added more to it lately lol. I'm a yarn addict! lol

I haven't made up my own baby blanket pattern yet, so I can't help you out with that one.

I do like the idea of putting the baby's initial on the blanket.
