Hi .. I'm new to this particular board, too! And, not new to knitting;)
You might try looking at Joann Fabrics Store(local or online) or local craft store. There are some cd's that you can learn to knit/crochet. Sorry I don't know the name offhand. Another place to look online is www.patternworks.com
They have computer programs too for learning to knit/crochet.

I would agree, size 8 needles, 14" Long (they are pretty standard length I think) and worsted weight yarn would be a great place to start.
