One of many mistakes or lessons I've taught myself since I've started crocheting.

when you went back to the stores did you take the afghan with you so the yarn could be seen by the people in the stores

the staff in the store you bought the yarn from are best placed to tell you what the yarn is - they might be able to roder some for you or you could then try off the internet

Any chance you can take a picture and post it? Who knows, someone may have the yarn in their collection!

As for the 1lb skeins, I only know of Red Heart and Caron that have them that large. You can check on http://herrschners.com/depts/id-1545.html

My guess is that it's Red Heart Aspen Print. You can see a small picture of it on the Coats and Clark web site

Do you remember the brand of the yarn? I recommend ebay--you could search for the brand and see if any matches come up. I've done this a couple of times and have had pretty good luck with it.
