Knitting a skirt for a child

After trying to crochet with the yarn I bought for DD, I decided it would be better to knit with it. How do I go about figuring out my starting cast on? What I'd like to do is a kp pattern so it looks like wide stripes of knit and purl. I know I should select a needle size and do a gauge swatch...where do I go from there?

Thanks all! I WILL do this! lol

Here is a toddler skirt pattern:

I'll bet that will help with your starting cast on, and then you could modify the body of the skirt as you like :)

That is really cute! I also found this one: http://www.berroco.com/exclusives/polly/polly.html It looks like it would be a good beginner one and may look nice with my verigated yarn. :)

I'll let you all know what I decide, thanks!!
