What's a "lifeline"?

I've seen knitters (on Ravelry) say that in complicated patterns, they like to use a "lifeline" to help them frog back if they make a mistake. Whatever this "lifeline" is, it sounds useful and I want to learn it.
Anyone ever use one? What is it?

I saw it on Ravelry, too, and looked it up to see what it was.

What a great idea, thanks for sharing the link.

Any idea why she said "oh don't put the needle in at that end, put them back in on the other end"?

i think she meant the knitting needle--warning not to put the needle through the wrong way so that the working yarn is hanging off the non-pointed end.

that's a great idea!

I took a peak at the video and enjoyed her explanation of the "lifeline".

She does most of her videos in Continental, sometimes she has versions showing

the left-hand thing is just because she knits continental--i knit from my left, but not quite as efficiently and quickly as her 'picking' style.
