Beginner Mittens???

Hi all...

I'm Julie and I have recently started knitting... I taught myself and my first piece was long enough I use it as a scarf and I've made two very basic hats, one for a newborn, another for my six year old son...

When I gave the hat to him, he was thrilled... but he said it was great I could knit... and that he wants his Mommy to make him a pair of mittens...

We live in GA and he won't need the mittens (hopefully) for several months now, but I'd like to get a start on trying to figure them out... and hopefully get them right before fall/winter...

Does anyone know of any basic mitten patterns?

There's an article "Mittens 101" in the archives of knitty magazine. The generic mitten pattern there is cuff-to-tip, in the round. This article uses a generic pattern, fill in your gauge and measurements.

I am in a similar bind, moving to cold country before next winter, and I want to use stash yarn. I'm threatening to make mittens the same way I do socks (two at a time, 'toe' up, magic loop) with an afterthought thumb.

Thanks for the welcome and for the two patterns... I'll definitely be checking them out and starting soon so I can practice and get the hang of it... if anyone else has suggestions, I'd love to hear them :)
