If you're sure your gage is right, you might get a longer needle and google "magic loop".

Ok....I'm definitley being blond today. I just busted out the ruler and the needle I was using was 24", not 16"...sorry! :)

I saw your post saying you were using the wrong length circ's. hehe. I was a bit confused before I saw that why the stitches weren't covering the whole circ needle. I always use my 16's for baby and toddler hats with that many stitches :P

I agree with another poster though, definitely always do a gauge swatch and also learn the magic loop. It's very useful sometimes.
