last year in june my family lost our brother Thom to aids. it was a long hard battle for him and was hard to watch.the hardest was knowing there was nothing we could do but make him happy. we had a beautiful outdoor service for him in maine.
we are putting together a piece of the aids quilt for him.it will be dedicated this year in may ~ memorial weekend~ at the same place we held his service.after that it will be part of the national quilt in atlanta.anytime we want to see it we can click on the website and see it.
my patch will have pictures of his house and garden from ogunquit maine that he loved so dearly.my older sister bought the background piece that has ocean scene. she will piece it all together for us.

I've volunteered w/the Quilt several times over the years, & seen parts of it when they came to my area. I was a volunteer in, was it 1996?, the last time the entire quilt was on display in Washington, DC. I've supported the quilt financially over the years because I think it is such a moving tribute. To see the entire thing laid out was incredible. I forget how many football fields' size it was then. And it continues to grow. To walk around & see the individual panels & their stories & pictures really puts a human face to this horrible epidemic. Your brother's panel sounds wonderful. It's a great thing to do for him. Did he know you were going to do it? A lot of folks have helped to make their own panel. I'm so sorry you lost your brother.

thank you. that must be incredible to see all the panels! to date there are almost 6,000.my sisters and i want to go to DC sometime when they display all.what a lovely way to volunteer your time. i know it will be in lancaster next weekend i 'll be too busy to go.
i'm not sure if he knew, our youngest sister who mostly took care of him might have talked to him about it.our oldest sister is keeping us organized on it. the panels are 3ftX6ft each...so we all have our own patch to put on.
the website is a nice tribute too.

It's here in Lancaster next weekend? I didn't know that! How did you find that out? I couldn't find any place on the Quilt site where it said where it will be. I haven't seen it in a few years, & of course it's always different sections that travel around, so I'd go see it if I knew about it. It will probably be in the newspaper, but hasn't been yet. If you know how I can find out where, please let me know.
I belong to the Names Foundation & get their mail. They're trying to bring the whole thing back to Washington soon. I can't imagine where it would fit. It's definitely an inspiring sight.
