Here are some things that produce a paler softer look but "natural" ...

Red/Pink: Fresh beets, canned cherries or frozen, crushed cranberries (not cranberry sauce or jelly)

Orange: yellow onion skins

Light Yellow: lemon peels, orange peels or ground cumin

Golden yellow: Ground Tumeric (a kind of spice)

Light Spinach

Blue: Red cabbage leaves or blueberries (crushed)

Purple: Grape juice (Welches)


Beige: Strong coffee

Red: Onion (Spanish Onion) skins

Yes you let them soak in hot water, you will see the color change and then add the normal vinegar and dye away... the colors are not as vivid as chemical dayes, but kind or a fun project for kids to see how it used to be done in the "pioneer days" ....
