Job woes

The newly-named managing editor, a real witch-on-wheels that a lot of people don't like, is trying to push me out the door. Within a few weeks of being promoted, she managed to get rid of somebody else she didn't like, so I'm the next target. She hasn't liked me from the day I got here. Won't speak to me. The only reason I can think of, since it started as soon as I got here, is that I find & mark her errors, & she doesn't like that. Anyway, a while ago she took away 1/3 of my job responsibilities. Yesterday she took away another 1/3. The responsibilities are being split up among the new, very young, completely inexperienced editorial assistant & the editors, who have too much work as it is. So now stuff sits on their desks waiting, while I twiddle my thumbs & play in iV. How long will my company keep me around when I'm logged into "Out of Work" for hours at a time every day?! My manager wnats me to take a software class so I can do page composition, but I'm never going to be very good at that. That's not my skill, & I never learned to type. They also want me to do online photo searches. Don't know how I feel about that. Don't know if & when tat will ever really start. Meanwhile, others are doing the job I was hired to do and am really good at.

Have you spoken to personell about this??? That really s*cks that she's treating you so lousy. But if you have a 'formal' job descripton, human resourses may be able to help you out. Of course that may just p*ss off your boss even more, sigh.

Sounds like it might be time to dust off that resume.......

No, I don't think anybody here has a formal job description. I haven't talked to HR (that's just 1 woman). Maybe I'll talk to Earl again, & ask him what he thinks I should do. I used to trust Earl completely. Lately I'm not as sure. Literally his only reaction at the meeting yesterday at which she took away the second 1/3 of my job was to say "Very good." And when I went to him after the meeting to complain, he wasn't much more helpful.

pretty amazing isn't it? that all the top people have no idea whats going on? hope earl keeps pushing for you.but then he sounds like he may be afraid to go against her just to save his job. people like her are just sad.to take down others to look good.

Katz,

If you can take classes and your company will pay for them, then go for it....even if you don't think you can do it. For one thing, you might surprise yourself, if you can take them during your normal work hours instead of sitting around "out of work" you will at least be busy, it might open up other opportunities for you in another department away from "her" and any classes you can take will make a resume look better if it comes to that.

I know how you feel about looking for another job at the age of 53 because I'm your age and I know that I have only a few years at my current job and it's scary thinking about the time I'll have to job hunt again.

Katz,
I'm so sorry you're going through this. It really stinks.
Start documenting EVERYTHING.
Maybe you can threaten that you're being discriminated against based on age or something.
Maybe you should talk to a lawyer that specializes in Equal Opportunity..... whatever it is. I think you should really fight this before you're out on the street, looking for a job that pays roughly half of your current salary.

Mary

I know it's completely wrong to start hoping that Witch-on-wheels gets hit by a bus, but it could happen.....

I don't think it's quite as bad as I had thought. I talked to Earl some more yesterday. He's tried harder & done more for me than I realized, though it's a bit scary to realize how much this has been discussed among how many people. He's apparently been meeting w/the 2 head editors as well as the HR person, in addition to having written that letter to the pres. He feels the way I do--that he doesn't know who else he can talk to or what else he can do. But listening to Earl, I began to think Megan (witchy) really IS doing this because she thinks it will be a faster, more efficient work flow. She's wrong, but maybe that is what she's really thinking. So, although it's still bad news for me, & I still know she hates me, it may not be as bad as I thought. Though Earl told me he DID accuse Megan of doing this in order to get rid of me. I don't know what her response was. Still nothing I can do about it, though.

I will take the software class if that actually ever materializes. I have my doubts about my ability to learn it, but I'll try. They said they'd pay for it. I found a place that does 2-day, all-day classes in Philly, so I could take the train, even stay over if I wanted to. But Earl just told me "they" want him to look into the up-and-coming program that may be replacing the one I was going to take classes in, so... I foresee somebody deciding to put a hold on my classes til it's decided whether we'e going to change to new software. LOL. Same ole, same ole.

Thanks, everybody, for the support & encouragement. We'll see how it all pans out.

she thinks it will be more efficient if one person is overloaded & behind and another sitting looking for work to do? she needs to reexamine her thinking. she sounds as if she is insecure about you working with her ..like you might want her job or something.
it is never a bad idea to learn a new area.
good luck :O)

Yeah, it's weird. Occasionally, work bottlenecks on my desk, waiting for me to read it. They know this, & somehow have the idea that it's always like that. So they think it will be faster to skip me. Wrong!
