Sleep Deprivation and Weight Gain - Any Connection?  By C. S. Bezas

The American Thoracic society announced today an astonishing study - that weight gain potentially is linked to lack of sleep. Who would have thought?

Yet their study seemed to show great correlation. They involved 68,183 women in the study over a period of 16 years! And the numbers were sobering:

Women who slept 5 hours a night were 32% more likely to gain 33+ pounds over the next 16 years as compared to women who slept seven hours a night!

The numbers were a bit better for women who slept 6 hours a night, but only by a bit. The women catching their zzzz's for 6 hours an evening still were more likely to experience major weight gain, compared to the women who slept 7 hours a night (by 12%).

The surprising piece in the study? That exercise or diet seemed to have no correlation to the weight gain (or lack thereof). I will be interviewing a variety of experts over the next couple of weeks regarding this staggering new study. But in the meantime, get your sleep - and make sure your adolescent is getting his! Not only does sleep deprivation slow our thinking, but now it looks like it increases our weight gain.

Like I said - time to go get some sleep!

I've heard quite a few stories about this lately and I can see that in it could very well apply in my case. So now the question is if I continue to exercise regularly and make wise food choices and start getting more sleep, will I finally start to lose weight? 33 pounds in the last 16 years is about right on. Hope it doesn't take me 16 years to lose it!!!

In fact just last night I made a promise to myself to start getting 7-8 hours of sleep a night. I managed to get in 6.5 last night.

Hmmm- I don't think that refers to me !! I am lucky if I get 4 straight hours sleep a nite! I hate to say that I don't have a weight problem. In fact, when I had my rotator cuff surgery, I was lucky if I slept 1 solid hour (because of the foolish contraption They had me in, plus the pain, allergic to pain killers) and I lost so much weight, that people were starting to be concerned for me !

So maybe I am just the odd duck that does not apply to! What do others think-- I know that there are other ladies here that are sleep deprived also!! urghhhH!

I really do think if you stuck to that plan and increased your sleep , that yes over time you would lose the weight.
