Teaching our daughters to be safe

Ok I work with a man that as a 39 year old woman I find creepy and disgusting on many levels. Well he came into my office this morning chit chatting like he is in a habit of doing. He's upset because a mother was upset and accused him of having bad intentions.

His story is that there is a 16 year old girl in his college class in the evening that sometimes is waiting 30 minutes to an hour for her mom to pick her up. Over the course of a couple weeks he has befriended this young lady and last night offered to drive her home after class each week. The girl being young was happy to accept pending her mom's permision. When her mom arrived she had my co-worker walk with her to her mother's car and ask about the transportation he had offered. The mother asked him what kind of man didn't have enough sense to not offer a teenager a ride unless he had ill intentions, told her daughter to get in the car and left. My co-worker felt offended.

I told him that if it was my daughter, one I would never leave her at a college campus at night to wait that long, but if I found out she was befriended by an older man that wanted to give her rides, I'd be upset as well. He and I debated about it, to no agreement.

What do you ladies think of this situation?

The Mom was right Mickey,
No man would offer a young girl a ride in this day & age.
Sad as that may be .. one can never too be careful :)

He probably did have honorable intentions, but in this day and age, he can't fault the mom for refusing the offer.

I agree!! There are so many dangers for our children to be aware of and if we don't teach them to protect themselves there are people who will take advantage of them.

maybe she got the same creepy vibes you have.if that is the case good for her. thank goodness the girl had the good sense to ask her mother. sadly, some kids would just say yes.the girl needs to find a safer place to wait for her mother

it is a sad society that you can't trust a person to have good intentions. sometimes i am scared to stop and help someone or offer a ride unless i know the person.
