Yep the sandwich!   (question at end)

Over half of us just raid the fridge and use whatever's there, choosing to stick to the same old fillings, almost afraid to try anything new.

However, the sandwich still remains one of the nation's favorite foods. We all know that there's nothing better when you're hungry - it's the ultimate convenience food and, served simply, it's the most comforting.

A nation of sandwich lovers:

  • Over half of us prefer our sandwiches cut in half
  • Surprisingly, more people prefer brown bread than white
  • Most of us like our crusts on
  • Nearly two thirds of us say our favourite sauce or topping is mayonnaise
  • A quarter of us admit suffering from sandwich envy when looking in the fridge at work!

The nation's favourite sandwiches

  1. Chicken, salad and mayonnaise
  2. Shrimp and mayonnaise
  3. Bacon, lettuce and tomato
  4. Tuna mayonnaise
  5. Egg mayonnaise

The nation's strangest sandwiches (in no particular order)

  • Bacon and marmalade
  • Peanut butter and jam
  • Cheese and jam
  • Chocolate spread and chips
  • Banana and hummus

Try these tips from celebrity chef, Silvana Franco, she shares her secrets on the art of perfect sandwich making:

  • Buy a selection of breads and rolls. Keep them in the freezer and pull out your favourites when needed. They won't take long to defrost.
  • For a flavoursome twist to your sandwich, spice up mayonnaise or spread with some herbs or a pinch of dried chilli flakes.
  • To avoid soggy sandwiches, get organised and prepare fillings the night before, then assemble in the morning.
  • Leftovers make the best next-day sandwiches - try roast lamb paired with hummus, roast beef with tzatsiki and cherry tomatoes, or chicken with mustard mayonnaise and cucumber.

What's your favorite sandwich? Do you experiment and enjoy a new sandwich creation once in awhile?

I like chicken salad, egg salad, or one my Mom used to make called olive nut. It's a blend of finely chopped walnuts, green olives and mayo.

peanut butter & jam is a strange sandwich? WHO did they survey? ROFLMAO...they don't know what they are missing :O) that is my fave!!smooth or crunchy- jelly, jam ,preserves sometimes bananas!

use whole grain bread or whole wheat wraps. i'm not a mayo fan. maybe a little in seafood salad but usually i'll use a ranch dressing instead for more flavor. i like honey mustard.
i do like turkey, thin sliced roast beef or beef baloney.
tonite i had a cooked chicken breast & italian cheese wrap sandwich.

my strange sandwich? got to have potato chips on my baloney!!!

Hey, I just cruised by, and noticed this question - I think this is from the iVillage UK page, so that might be why they say "jam" and why it might be considered odd.... but I still can't imagine that!

I also thought it was weird that Ham and Swiss, Rueben, other "classics" weren't on the list...

I can't believe that PBJ wasn't listed as one of the nation's favorite. Isn't that a staple in every household and part of every childhood? It's my comfort food. I just had a couple in the last few days. If I wasn't trying to lose weight, I truly think I would eat one everyday!!
