Pumpkin Parties

Maybe I'm rushing the season, but around here it is definitely fall !   Dh surprised me with a pumpkin the other day, and while I still have some more summery potted plants on my front porch , the pumpkin added a whimsical look to it.... (no I haven't carved a face yet,,,, )

Anyone else have a pumpkin yet?  When do they go on sale in your area?   Has anyone ever been to a pumpkin party?  (seems like a neat idea to me)

Pumpkin Party
It's all about fun and friends when a neighborhood gathers for its annual pumpkin-carving party

WRITTEN BY JULIA SZABO; PRODUCED BY KEVIN REINER

Photography by Debra McClinton

Left: In anticipation of her Uncle Kevin's annual Halloween party, four-year-old Brenna Tyler beats a path to his house, along a maple-leaf-strewn trail artfully lined with three different varieties of pumpkins and canning jars rigged with tea lights.

Autumn's orange- and amber-hued pageantry is heralded annually at the Granville, Ohio, home of Chuck Ross and Country Living contributing editor Kevin Reiner, where they co-host a pumpkin-carving party that's become a local tradition. What started as a get-together for eight has grown into an event that draws some 80 guests. Sheltered beneath a pair of rented tents pitched in the vegetable garden, the festivities are illuminated by paper lanterns and hurricane lamps, with bales of straw for seating. Fortified with a wide range of potluck treats ("from caramel apples to shepherd's pie to chocolate mousse!" Kevin says with a laugh), guests undertake the serious fun of holiday decorating. Upon arrival, guests sign a book and mark their pumpkin's underside to identify their masterpiece after judging. Carving is restricted to the adults, who bring with them their own pumpkins and tools. For the kids, Kevin prepares an inspiring spread of art supplies: palettes of water-based paint, glue sticks and glitter. When all the work is done, the jack-o'-lanterns are displayed on the front porch of the Federal-style house. After the adults handle ignition with fireplace matches, an informal judging takes place. The atmosphere of fellowship glows with the warmth of a bonfire, kindling connections old and new.

I have not bought a pumpkin yet- don't know if I will, but I should for Matthew! Been thinking too much about this iodine radiation thing- kinda getting myself into a self-made frenzy!

I think a pumpkin party would be cool- those pics look soooo New England-- IMHO! Ohh all those dead leaves on the ground-- that is what gets my asthma in a whirl!

I bought 2 pumpkins about 2 weeks ago when dd and I went apple picking. I did see some on sale the last week in August. I still have a summer potted plant on my front porch with the 2 pumkins.

I've never been to a pumkin party, never even heard of one.
