I've heard that you can use any cell phone - even one that has been deactivated - to call 911. Does anyone know if this is true? If it is, I think I'll give my old, non-active cell phone to dh to keep in his car in case of an emergency. I tried to get him to get a phone, too, but he sees no need for it (he's the techie around here - I'd think he'd want one!)

I believe this was announced a couple of years ago to have people donate their old cell phones and Sprint/T-Mobile companies, would active it ONLY for 911 calls and they would give those out to women who have been battered, etc.

Don't understand how a deactivated phone can work though?
I have two old ones sitting in a drawer right now :)
