I'm not too concerned here in the States. Not many states have been affected, yet, and no one here has died.

The idea of tis scares me a lot. viris's are getting worse and worse as time goes on.

The conditions they are raised in vary here. Most hog farms are run so carefully, they people can't drive the vehicles on some of the farms. Pigs are kept in such clean places that you hear stories of piglets that fall off trucks and can not be put back in with other pigs. they are that careful. trucks are cleaned before loading and after unloading. you change out of street clothes in the shower to be sure you are clean and into the farm clothes.

Private farms are different. they don't have many are are usually for thier own use or private sale now.

did you know if a pig gets cut in the tight pens they will often lead to a massacure. They will devour each other...so they are constantly on the watch for this too.

Can you tell i raised pigs and my grandpa too. small amounts.I also raised chickens and cows.

Any animal that is amss produced suddenly increase risks of disease.

most small farms know thier animals and see any changes. there are the bad farmers that just don't care.

As for the swine flu ...it scares the poo out of me!! My immune system is not that great lately. add blood loss, and asthma and i am in a high risk group.

Now as for travel to mexico. i do not understand why people are still going there with the murders that have been front and center. so any canadians held in jail, murdered or had other bad things happen. why do people think it would be different for them?? then they call for help whjen something does happen. Stay home guys or go somewhere else!!

I am wondering why people that have been to mexico are not being detained and tested or kept for observation for a few hours....esp those still going.

In Canada there is a plane company that will cancel your flights to mexico with no charges.I think people should jump on this and stay safe.

PS: Canada already has cases of the swine flu. The news reports that trips wedding and other things are cancelled or postponed. Thank god, i say!

Rusty

i sure remember SARS it washorrible. we were in vancouver during it with aj's throat. He had surgery there and there were so many precausions. Masks, washing hands at all doors, wearing gowns....scarry.

we stayed at easter seal home and i had to share my room with a stranger. The restrictions there were very high. so many cancer patience and sickly kids. It was awful! i almost lived at the hospital.

I was alone at the airport with aj coming home when it got real scarry. i remember waiting for the plane waiting area to be assigned so we could check in. we were waiting in a resturant and an oriental airline landed. they all were wearing masks and i so scared. aj with fresh surgery, and they had lost him once during surgery. I was so glad to get home. My truck was waiting in the lot. we got takeout and drove!! it was early morning, but we just wanted to get home.

I hope they get this one under control fast!!

It would be a very hard decision if we already had a paid for trip booked to Mexico at this time. I would not want to go, but would not want to lose our money either. I hope I would be able to cancel the trip.

You are very knowledgeable on the subject of pig farming Glenda. Thank you for all you've said, you have educated me! It makes me think even more so that the best thing to do is to stay out of Mexico. I also hope they have beefed up the watch on the illegals coming into our country

The last farm we were on we had three pregnant sows. The kids...before the prgnantcies rode them The kids were very young themn LOL They caught it when i found them LOL

did you know a cow is dirty and will lay in thier own dung...but a pig will(if given the room) poo in a corner and sleep well away from it. so other than them liking mud to cool themselves in the heat ....they are one of the cleanest animals. Pigs will also eat snakes. we had a baby rattler in thier pen and as it came out(i might have been bit) the snake caught it and ate it. you see the pigs skin is very thich and they can't bute through it. you just don't want them in the garden. i wish i had pictures of the boys, after leaving the pen gate open...trying to catch the greasy pigs in my garden. it had just rained and they were really slippery. KIds.

My grandpa had mean pigs. we would run through the pen to get to the door and climb on it into the hay loft. i was bit a couple times.

Ya private farms sometimes in places where the cleanliness was not great in Mexico or other countries ...could be a danger spot. Like i said most of the pork is grown in very clean buildings and monitored constantly too. the are also tested and so is the food and air quality.

As for mexico...this would be a good year with the resession and all to travel your own country. Cheaper, better healthcare, and safer. want to borrow my rv??
