It depends (now that I think of it). Here in the computer room, where the thrown away stuff is mostly paper, I call it trash.
But in the kitchen, where it is more food and other messy junk getting
Growing up in NJ, it was called garbage. Here in KS, it's called trash.
Generally, when I use the term "garbage", I'm not referring to articles of trash..more like hooey or nonsence or worthless facts, etc.
I wonder if anyone says "rubbish".
Being English ive always said rubbish.
