John and I got home around 6pm tonight..been busy going through mail, phone calls, emails, etc. We had a *great* time!!
What we did...
In Cincinnati, OH..besides spending time with my DD2 & family..we went to two museums, Natural History and Children's Museums..a Dinosaur film at an Omnimax theater..a visit to the Newport area, fun place along the Ohio River with shops & restaurants & outside entertainment and such..the Aquarium..lots of good restaurants..played Wii with the kiddies at their home. The Newport Aquarium is *wonderful*! They have a very large jelly fish exhibit that is really something to see..*beautiful*!! We stayed at the Embassy Suites, very nice, beautiful large atrium where J & I had ample time to spend alone and enjoy beverages together while talking or reading.
Friday was the most important event. It was my DSonIL's last and final medical graduation..FINALLY!! We've been doing this for 18 years!! It was a dressy affair held in a beautiful very old building in downtown Cincinnati. The inside of the building was all woods everywhere like you'd see in some attorney's offices or home libraries of mansions and such with tasteful furnishings, fireplaces, paintings, etc. Dinner was lovely and they said very nice complimentary things about my DSonIL when he accepted his certificate. We're proud!
On the way to Louisville on Monday..John took me to the little town of LaGrange, KY. So cute!! I really loved their Corner Store..really cute gift shop..and we bought a couple of things..fun place. A train runs right through the middle of the street.
In Louisville, KY..toured the excellent museum and did the walking tour of Churchill Downs. There we were standing at the railing looking down at the soil that the famous Kentucky Derby horses run on and viewed the infield where thousands of people walk around on Derby day for parties..Very Cool! We saw the "cheap seats", "moderate seats" and the "Millionaire Row" area..believe me, there is nothing "cheap" about Derby Day!! Yikes!! There was no race going on that day. We had lunch there on the outside patio overlooking the very pretty grounds. Also visited the Louisville Slugger baseball factory..fun! Went to some good restaurants. It was my birthday that day, nice way to spend my bday.
On our way to Lexington the next day, we saw a sign on the highway of a small historic town with shops, restaurants, etc. We visited there..very cute town..and of course bought a couple of things. ;-) Fun to veer away from your plans for a bit to enjoy an "experience". Fortunately, J likes doing those things too.
In Lexington, KY..Visited the Jim Beam distillery. Their tour was closed due to renovations, but we got to do the free tasting..two types of their burbon..I was the only one in the room who choked on the second one and had to add water to mine..LOL!! We also visited a *beautiful* and very large horse farm..the Kentucky Horse Park..went through their museum and took a horse drawn tour and saw a film. Lexington looks like I expected Kentucky to look like..rolling hills, lots of white fences, lots of horse farms, beautiful homes..clean and scenic.
We drove 10 hours the next day..yesterday..to Kansas City, MO. We ate at the KC Masterpiece barbecue restaurant that night and then crashed! Today we visited with my 87 year old aunt who lives there and took her to lunch at Jack Stack barbecue restaurant..yep, more barbecue..lol..and had a nice visit before we headed home.
Thank you for the nice birthday greetings..much appreciated!! Sorry, we forgot to take our camera again. I need to get a new one that is small and I can carry it in my purse at all times. I won't be doing much catching up here as I've missed too much, so will probably just pick up from here. If there's anything really important that I should know about, please someone inform me..thank you. It was good to get away and good to get home again too.
Hugs all around!!

Welcome home Donna,,,,
first, congratulations to your dsil!
so what did you do on your birthday?
Of all the things you mentioned on your trip, I would have liked to go to the baseball ball factory, now that sounded so interesting..
congrats to your dsil!!!
my son and family were in louisville earlier in the week. they stopped for the day and went to the zoo there, said they had a great time.
they should be at their new duty station today or tomorrow.
so glad you made it home safe and sound.
have a great 4th.
hugs,
The baseball factory was fun. I thought of my oldest DGD while there as she plays baseball..or softball..or whatever..it's all the same to me..LOL!! She would have loved it. In one area, there were three wax..I assumed they were wax..life sized figures of three famous baseball players. They were almost spooky good in their details and we could walk right up to them.
My birthday fell on our first full day in KY..Louisville..and we went to Churchill Downs and the baseball factory. I loved it all..wonderful day. J wanted to take me to a particular restaurant that night for my bday, but we were so tired we passed on it until the following night.
I think my favorite part of the trip was those two quaint little towns. They weren't crowded at all, so pretty with flowers and store fronts painted happy colors. We sat in a corner shop in one town that was a combo used book store, antique shop and coffee shop. We sat and enjoyed iced coffees there after visiting a gift shop. I bought two new table scarfs and will get them set up soon. I need to buy something to go with them..new flowers, new candles, maybe a piece of pottery, and whatever else I think of. I loved everything we did, but the crowds get
Hi Ellen..thank you!!
Interesting that your DS & family were in Louisville while we were there. My DH lived there for a couple of years, so he took me to see the house where they lived..first wife..beautiful large country home in a housing area of rolling hills and no homes had fences..each home was on a minimum of one acre..just beautiful.
I hope your son & family are happy and stay safe in their new duty station and whatever comes next.
Happy 4th to you too!
Welcome home,so glad you had such a good time.
You certainly packed alot of
Von.
Hi, it's so good to see you this morning. You and John did so much during your trip. You must both be exhausted...I know I would be.
Congrats to you dsil. I know how happy you must be to have all your "chickies" home now;-)
Great way to spend your birthday. I would love to visit churchill Downs. We've visited my sis who lives in Sturgis, KY and it is a beautiful state.
So happy you had a good time and really happy you're back, safe and sound.
Hugs back ya!
Thanks Von, it is good to be home!
We really don't feel like doing anything today, but we're both doing laundry. Hate packing and hate unpacking, the rest is fun! LOL!
Hi friend Fran! We're more lazy today than exhausted. We are doing laundry though and unpacking..hate both after a trip! We're unpacked, but I still have a few things to put away that are on our bed right now..groannn!
Thank you about my DSonIL..so glad to have all the college, medical school, residency, fellowship *FINALLY* done after all these 18 years of doing this!! It's been a family project, so we all feel like we've graduated..lol!
Yes, it is great having all of my "chickies" home again! I hope it's not too hard of an adjustment for them, always hard getting used to a move and a different house to live in.
We loved Churchill Downs, the museum there is excellent and a great film too along with the walking tour. Many of the famous horses are buried there too, so it's like hallowed ground. Louisville is a large busy place. I enjoyed Lexington more as it's not as big and looks more like I expected KY to look like with the rolling hills, white fences and many horse farms..beautiful!
We're happy to be home safe and sound too. The worst was the traffic around St. Louis, MO..horrible!! There was a detour too making the traffic even more horrific and it went on and on and on for many miles, felt like we'd never get out of that traffic. I was glad John was doing the driving, but if I had been driving it may have been less stressful for me even though his driving was very safe.
