Throw away your contact lens case today!

My eye doctor just warned me that old contact lens cases are terrible for my eyes. He said that I should throw away my case every month! Yikes! My case is like a year old. I never knew about this and my doctor said that it is a hot topic. He said they are just finding out that cases grow all sorts of nasty fungus and there is no way to stop it - even if you clean them! He was really worked up about it. My daughter and I are throwing away our old case and getting a new one today.
Has anyone else had this problem or heard it from their eye doctor? Do you know you are supposed to change your lens case once a month?
Sorry, I don't wear contacts, so I'm not a huge help. That seems like a lot of plastic waste going into the landfill though. Are the cases recyclable? I wonder if there is a way to sterilize them instead? Maybe you could get a second opinion by calling another eye doctor?
Keep us posted; I'm really interested in hearing more about this!
I certainly will - thanks for following up here!
