Hello everybody.

A few days ago I was browsing through the web and stumbled on the March exercise. I decided to try something. I accidently replied to someone first (sorry) but then actually managed to post the assigment properly Then the boards changed and I got lost for a while. I only now realise that ivillage is predominantly a US and female site. I'm Scottish and male, at least so my wife tells me, so I hope I didn't break any protocols by submitting my exercise. Can someone advise me?

I would be interested in any feedback anyone may have. You can find my exercise in the archives section

Thanks

Welcome! I can't speak for everyone, but I don't think anyone will hold your maleness or your scottishness against you. I'm not in the US either (I'm a NZer living in Colombia), but considering the vast majority of internet users (and home PC owners) are in the US, and the site is based in the US, it's not surprising that most members are American. Plenty of us 'foreigners' floating around though. As for being a man, well it's not your fault I guess. I see no problems. Post away. I liked your story by the way - nice interpretation of Rexnal's curse.

Hello mikeabz and welcome! Actually, you sent your story to me...lol...but please, don't worry about it, as this is a brand new format for all of us. We said goodbye to our old board a couple of days ago and I am still getting used to this one.

I did read your story, and I found it to be very descriptive and well written. Also, you continued with the first paragraph, instead of letting it stand alone, which I though was very original. You have a writing style that's all your own and I would love to see more of your work.

Thanks for sharing with us!

Dear Mike,

No matter WHAT your wife thinks of you, you are welcome here. Also, it is not a requirement that you post an exercise before you critique someone. The only serious rules I guess are a) don't post any work here that is NOT the monthly exercise. There are other boards for that. And b) when critiquing, encouragement is the name of the game, tho honest feedback/criticism is fine (no slamming anyone).

Other than that, WELCOME to the board. I don't think there are very many other sites like this that are "male" oriented, so feel free. We have had a lot of men here before, maybe even some now. We are all here to perfect our writing and to get honest criticism about it. I am pretty sure that nobody here feels exclusionary to ANYONE (except people who don't proof their work, haha, that is MY pet peeve!)

Also, feel free, now that the board has changed, to repost your work, seriously. There are hordes of readers who will NOT go back to the archived boards now. So reposting on a new board is allowed, and I even suggest it to you.

Again, welcome, and feel free to stick around!

Hi mike and welcome to the board. We welcome anyone who wants to try the exercises or ask writing related questions -- male or female. I didn't get a chance to read your story before we changed to the new board form, but I hope you'll repost it.

Looking forward to seeing more of your work here.

Linda

Barbara,

Thanks for the feedback. Didn't give much thought to the continuation of the first paragraph. Just seemed natural. It was kind of you to say I had a style of my own. Not sure what that means but I think it is positive

I am looking forward to getting involved in more exercises.
