Hello everyone,

I'm new here and have a question about budgeting for groceries.

I'd say $100/week is a good start. Personally I'd much rather budget to high then to low...especially in the beginning. At the end of the month you may realize you only need $75/week. If so, then you could designate that extra $25 to your savings or maybe date night.

Good luck and welcome!

$400 per month for a single person is very high.

I pay $300 per month and that is for myself, dh and our soon to be 16 year old son.

I don't know what prices are like in the US, but regardless its much better to budget more to begin with, rather than budgeting too little. Remember that the budget you come up with now doesn't need to be perfect and will not stay that same permanently.

What I would recommend in terms of keeping grocery costs down though:
* Use store brands where possible, just remember to compare prices because sometimes name brands on special can be cheaper.
* Shop with a list. Personally I find that when I shop without a list I come out with a whole lot of food that doesn't work well together for meals.
* Don't do your grocery shopping hungry, even if you have a list, you will buy more if you haven't eaten before shopping.

I, too, only shop for myself – for the most part.
