Did anyone watch the Debt Diet show yesterday? If you missed it, there's information on the Oprah show Web site: http://www.oprah.com/packages/oprahs-debt-diet.html

I started learning about budgeting by watching personal finance segments on shows like this.

Yes, I watched and must say I got very frustrated at these people that just can't say no!

I agree. There must be some underlying issues for someone who could disregard - or not even consider - the consequences that kind of spending has on the family. Some wires just aren't connecting, or maybe they are just very selfish.

One woman actually forged her husband's signature to buy a new car! That's not only a crime, it's passive-agressive at best and maybe even delusional (did she think he wouldn't notice a new car?). A good financial expert has to be part accountant, part therapist, I think.

Colleen,

You did notice that the family of two adults owned FIVE cars, correct? I'm assuming that woman has issues other than just money.

Yes - they had 5 cars. That's the lady who forged the signature to get one of them. When Jean Chatzky said they'd have to sell 2 of them, the woman actually looked surprised.

Jean also told her to go from spending $600/mo at the salon to just $300/mo (haha) and cut back from $100 a day on takeout to just one meal out per day. Wow. Their annual income was

I watched it years ago and some of the cases/families are a bit extreme the one that stands out the most was the couple (I think they had 2 kids) and they ate every meal as take out, on paper plates and plastic utensils and had more cars then they needed.

I found the episodes to be interesting and eye opening.

I can understand the want to have take out often I would eat it so much more if I could afford it but the paper and plastic, just put the stuff in the dishwasher, its not that big a deal its not like you have pots and pans to clean as well...
