Getting to know you...
Fri, 04-25-2003 - 12:14pm
Just thought it might be nice to do some sort of introduction thing...I'll go first.

I'm 28, divorced, and a single mom to a great 10 yr old girl. I am currently in debt about $12-15K, not including college loans (thank GOD for deferments)! I live in Greenville, MI and work full time as a Sales Support Associate for a nationwide insurance company. I like music, movies, reading, the outdoors, volunteer work and more...

This was a good idea--I've enjoyed reading all of these.

As for me, I'm 31 and single, although my wonderful and fiscally-responsible boyfriend has been living with me for a month. He's really the one who encouraged me to get a grip on the money. We share our house with a very opinionated wire-fox terrier named Asta.

I have a mortgage and car payments, but I really consider those necessities (I live in the country--no mass transit!). The biggest knock against me is the 18K in CC debt that I ran up when I was young and stupid. I've put myself on a fairly strict budget, and according to a debt payoff calculator I found online, I should have that paid off, if I stick to my repayment plan, in just under 3 years, which is far less than I would have ever dreamed. It seems like a long way off now, but it will be SO worth it.

I'm 25 and also in MI, never married mom to 3-y-o DS, $5400 in CC and car loan. In the process of getting seriously organized and changing old habits - I'll never be free of debt if I don't change my bad spending habits. I'm not ready to start thinking about my student loans yet LOL, they are supplementing my income while I cut back my hours at work to go to school full time. Hoping to have my degree in hand April 04 and if all goes well, finishing off the debt around that time too. I don't have much time for hobbies, but I did invest in a nice jogger stroller and (dare I say it?) I'm "in training" for my first 5k, I'll be running in the "Race for the Cure" on June 21. So that gives me about a month and a half to get my lazy booty in shape! =)

I'm 29, married to DH (also 29) for just less than a year. We live in Northern VA just across the Potomac from DC. We still have our money separate mainly because I have a lot of debt and he doesn't make much, but we split our expenses. I have about $14K in cc debt, $11K in car loan and about $44K in student loans. I will have the cc debt paid off by December of next year, according to my schedule, at which time I will throw those payments toward my car loan getting it paid off over two years earlier than the terms. I refinanced it last fall, but with my snowballing payments I'll be able to have it paid off only 6 months after the original loan was supposed to end. I recently consolidated my student loans too and have really good terms! I have been in debt since starting grad. school 7 years ago. I managed to make it through college without a penny of debt, but then I went crazy when I had my own apartment and lived in the city, where I attended grad. school. It's been a struggle for me since starting to accumulate this debt, but I finally feel that I have it under control now. I'm actually glad that I've had to struggle since I will remember it and never be in this kind of debt again...except for a mortgage, but that's different! DH and I hope to have a house by this time next year and that has been my impetus for change in my financial life!

Sig adn car loan will be paid next year after we sell our house and move to Omaha, Nebraska (YUK!!). hubby's job is getting transferred. I am a SAHM and cant' wait to get out of debt so we can live it up. Been frugal living for 3 years and I want to buy something I want again, not stuff I need.

Here's mine:

I'm Bridget (28) in Ohio, married for almost 6 years with 1 dd, Caitlin (3 yrs). We have $13,900 of credit card debt (down from $18,500 since August!), $29,000 in school loans, $9800 in car loan, and $37,000 left on our house. According to my Quicken Debt Reduction plan, we should be completely out of debt in 6 years, and out of cc debt by December 2004. I can't wait!

I work part-time as a client associate in Private Banking. In my spare time, I play 2nd alto sax in a big band and sub as a bari sax player in another big band. I also enjoy scrapbooking and have recently taken up gardening.

Hi everyone! I've been lurking here for awhile, so time to introduce myself! I'm 43, living with my fiance 4 yrs. now, and a empty-nester (my 17yo DS moved to his dad's house last summer). We live in Kansas City, MO. I'm a graphic artist and my DF is a maintenance mechanic in civil service. He has a DD 25, and a DS 24, who lives with us temporarily.

When I moved in 4 yrs ago, my DF made it his mission in life to clean up my credit, whether I liked it or not. It has been tough, but he's been sooo good about it. I had about $15k in student loans (2 of these in default) and another $15k in old, bad debts - many of these in collection. Today, I'm proud to say all that's left is about $6k in student loans and my credit score is 694!

In his name, we have $120k in mortgage, $13k cc, and $23 auto and motorcycle loans. 4 years ago, we had 14 cc's totalling about $30k - this is now down to only 2 cc, and $13k. The goal has been to keep my credit clean and debt-light so we could buy real estate in the country (retirement dream) in my name. I'm so happy to report that just last month I was pre-approved for $140k for a home purchase! (4 yrs ago I couldn't get $140.00 to pay the electric bill.) Meanwhile, we've been doing major renovations on his (our) house to increase its value and paying as we go. 4 yrs ago this house was valued at $72k - today it is worth $150k. We're hoping to find our dream home in a resort area (or build it) soon, but not planning to move there until he's eligible for retirement in 8 years.

I wish I had found this board a long time ago - would have given me someplace to vent while we struggled. But we're so near the summit now and the view from here is FANTASTIC! My DF has taught me many of the strategies talked about in this board, and they REALLY DO WORK!

I'm glad to be here - thanks for having me.

I'm 30, married for 3+ years and have a DD 7. I work FT and DH does too (on commission which isn't always great for my stress levels) We have always had debt and just started to focus on living debt free this year. Right now we have about $18K in CC, $177K in mgt, about $60K in auto loans, other $5K in student loans (in deferrment) and about $15K for DHs toys (motorcycle and 4 wheeler). Once we have the CCs paid for we will then work on paying off all the other stuff. For fun I spend a lot of time volunteering in the community and reading financial books. (Boy do I need more exciting hobbies)LOL
