Summer air-conditioning

I was visiting a good frind last night...had pizza and ice ceam at the currently unair-conditioned house.....I almost melted! I have a central system in my house and at work so I forget that there are unair-conditioned places besides the great outdoors...!

What is your current air-conitioner situation? Are you one of those people who do not like air-conditioning? Have you decided to cut back or not use it this year due to debt? Have you gone into debt to buy an air-conditioner? What temperature do you keep it at most of the time? Do you go to the mall or the library to cool off? Or stay longer at work?

Here in PA the humidity is so thick you can almost cut it with a knife! But not today. After some wicked thunderstorms, we are getting a clear and dry day with some wind. Today no a/c and all windows are open. The best part is it is to be in the 50's tonight.

But, otherwise we have a large (220 volt) a/c that cools the downstairs. I do keep it on a save setting where it cycles on and off. (Every year I hope for a Christmas card from the Met Ed people. It sure feels like I'm the reason for their holiday bonus!).

I don't use an a/c upstairs. Our house is turn of the century and I'm not sure the wiring could handle it if we all had a/c in the bedrooms. So since it can't be all of us, it's none of us. You'd think it would make for horrible sleeping but it hasn't been so bad. Must be the window fans. If it gets too bad we can always camp out downstairs.

No a/c here - and a bit of a miserably hot week going on, but I really don't see the need for a/c here.

All my best,

I think I am the only one on the planet who does not think A/C is worth the cost. Granted, I get cold very easily and am freezing most of the winter (but I still keep the heat on low and wear a lot of sweaters and blankets). We have central air in our home and rarely use it to my DH and DS's dismay. Everyone we mention this to thinks we are totally out of our minds. Yesterday we did finally turn it on because I got sick of their whining! I am currently sitting in my home with a sweater on but DH and DS are happy. I never had any type of A/C growing up and don't remember being horribly impaired in any way by it. I think once again our society is just soooooo spoiled that it can't consider being hot or uncomfortable for a few days. Oh well, just needed to vent and am interested if anyone feels the same way as me.

Well, we are very fortunate in that our utilities are included in our rent.

debtlessgirl,

I feel the same way as you! I think a/c is very overrated. I'm also one of those people who is cold all the time though. The difference between my dh and I is crazy... he'll be in bed sleeping in shorts and a tee, with no covers; and I'll have flannel pj pants on with covers up to my chin! lol We don't have a/c and it is waaaaay down at the bottom of the list of things to get for our home. I don't mind the summer heat at all - in fact I enjoy it - unless it gets REALLY hot. I live in NH though.. I'd probably feel differently if I lived in the Southwest or something!! :o)

I don't really like A/C, truth be told. I like having it at work, but at home I don't care...I can always go to the basement if it's too hot upstairs. We are moving in mid-July, and our new house doesn't have A/C either, but the guy who lives there now is leaving an a/c unit which we could have installed if we want. BUT, I love how my utility bills take a completely nosedive after winter!! My DH is a cook, so he gets VERY hot at work and wants A/C to come home to, so I think we'll probably end up getting it put in....there goes my summer budget! :) Mind you, we live in Canada and I think there's only about two weeks a year when you can actually say that you wish you had it...otherwise it's unnecessary!

OK I think I am the lone Texan.

AC IS THE BIGGEST BLESSING!!!

We have had the AC on since March and it won't go off until November. We have already hit 100 and well with about 90% humidity as a common factor we need that AC.

AC is a must!!! I live in Virginia, and it gets unbearably humid and hot. I consider it a necessity, even more so than food. If I had to, I would eat Ramen noodles all summer, just so I could have AC.

Don't need it here but our last home was in the midwest and it was a common thing for the heat index to reach the 100-115 degree mark PLUS the humidity.
