something fishy going on

I found two transactions on my bank statement from last month that occured in a place neither DH nor I have ever been to. I notified them of these charges and asked about disputing them and getting our money back. SO now I'm wondering if the information from our debit card wasn't lifted while we were at a local military exchange or something. Either that or DH is totally lieing to me about it, and I'm going to be hugely upset if that's the case. A stranger is one thing but if DH is lieing that'll be even worse!!

You can get more information from the establishments (unless they are online) that charged to your account. Get that contact info fm your account bank. Also, put a Fraud Alert on your credit report with Experian (and other three credit reporting agencies). I would immediately close the account (credit card/bank account/etc.) and reopen a new one with a different number. Let the bank know about this too. It could be that the transaction is legitimate but the place you paid at or he paid at uses a different billing company. Again, communication with that vender is very key to figuring this out.

Another thing: its not safe to use your debit card anymore. Use a credit card and then pay off it with your checking account, sure. But if you're both running around exposing your debit card number to bunch of places with tons of employees, things can happen. Just be suspicious. I am thinking that your husband is not lying to you, but that there is a scamming employee or something going on. You need to take safeguards. If after you cancel your acct and more "weird" charges start hitting again, I would have a serious discussion with your husband about not using his debit card. Just have him use his credit card...Fraudulent charges are covered and protected with a credit card more than with a debit where bank investigations can ty up funds for a while figuring out what happened. Let your bank know immediately though. They can probably find out more for you.

Hope this helps.

It would help if we had a credit card we could use for that account, and if changing it to a different account wouldn't mess us up for weeks leaving us unable to access that account!! I can't open a new account in our new state until I iron out a supposed overdraft to a bank here that I've never had :-( SIGH..what a mess this is!! About the only thing I can think of to do would be to have DH transfer his direct deposit over to USAA where we have a savings account and open a checking account, but we'd still have to have access to our money in the meantime and this REALLY fricking BITES!

What good advice! I'll remember that in case anything like this happens to me.

If your debit card has a Visa or Mastercard logo - it follows the EXACT same rules and regs as any credit card.
