Guess I'm looking for a seasonal job

I went to my interview Friday. Things are looking good but the hire date isn't until Jan 3 because of the holidays and company budget cuts. So it looks like if we want extra money I need to find a seasonal job. Looks like I will need soemthing during the day time since Brandon works until 7 and we don't have childcare that late. Maybe I can work at mailboxes etc. They send packages and are open during the day time.... hmmm.. Something else to look into.

Me too!

We don't have kids, but I need to find something outside of DH's normal hours (he's home at 4 pm; in at 7 am or so)...What kind of work would this be for? (I tend to gravitate to non-profit, but am trying to keep an open mind)...

Well I'm just looking for something to make a little extra money so we can snowflake. My husband won't be getting his commission checks until at least November (they run 2 months behind!) and he took a slight paycut when you consider he hasn't gotten commissions. I just need something extra. The sitter is $60 a week so I would prefer to work something at night. Say stocking shelves or something? I've never done seasonal help so I have no idea where to even start looking.

Hi there. Some of the stores around my area are open till midnight for the holidays...and we have some grocery stores (Shoprite especially) that are 24 hours all the time..Places like a 7-11, WAWA, Checkers, etc. are open 24 hours. If you have any of those types of places in your neighborhood, maybe you can find something that has hours that work for you. Perhaps an answering service? (you know like for doctors offices, etc). I don't know where to look for jobs like that, but maybe someone else here might.

If you don't like the retail route, try a personnel/staffing agency - especially if you don't mind light industrial work, a lot of times they have data entry or customer service positions and are gearing up for the extra work for Christmas. I work as an Account Manager for an agency and one of my clients has a seasonal increase in staff, but do all of their hiring through agencies. A lot of companies don't like to hire then fire staff. They have 3 shifts running, Mon-Sat, and their are a lot who do this. A good agency won't ask for a fee, and they pay the same rate often as the full-time employees. Go to a reputable agency and you might find something that works for your schedule. Just a thought.

Actually I think I will go to something Retail or in the package sending route. I'm going to check out the Mailboxes Etc place tomorrow. I know that they get really busy with people trying to avoid the post office lines. Hopefully it will be decent hours too!

I worked at an answering service for a few years! Normally they would welcome someone like me that left on good terms back with open arms especially with all of my experience (I was a shift supervisor) but they have lost a bunch of accounts. They used to hire seasonally during the winter because of all of the doctor offices and propane companies but they have lost the propane companies and have already had to let people go because of it... Hours are few and far between right now. :(

Our next door neighbor has offered to help keep DeLainey if I do have to work late or something. I guess we will see how that goes? And if I need her or not.

I guess I just need something to keep me busy! I am really bored sitting at home. My daughter has gotten very very independent and I need "human adult" interaction! I would like to start snowflaking away too!

I guess I'll post an update when I know something tomorrow. Brandon is off tomorrow and I can actually go collect applications and turn them in.

Hi Stephanie,

I am applying at a year-round Christmas shop that needs extra holiday help. I figure it might help put me in the holiday mood :) I am also pretty sure a specialty gift shop that I used to manage would throw a few hours my way.

Normally I wouldn't be thinking retail, but I am like you--I could use the social interaction, and I like the idea of hopping right in and getting to work. I went to a temp agency last week and was very disappointed. I will check out the others, but I was not impressed with what this one had to offer.

Good luck with your search!
