I wrote a few times about our massive debt and a terrible thing happened today - DH lost his job. I don't know what we're going to do. We are screwed.

I am so sorry to hear that your husband lost his job. Make sure he goes tomorrow to unemployment.

I don't have any advice or suggestions to give you. Hugs to you.

Get out all your bills and start calling the credit card companies this week. Some companies if you pay on time every month, they will let you skip a month. But you have to ask before you become late on a payment. If they let you do that, that buys you a little time. Then after the approved-skipped-payment passes, call them back and see if you can pay a lower amount for a few months until he lands a new job. Maybe by then he will have started one and you can give them a date you can pay the minimums again. Getting them to agree to these things before you miss a payment will help prevent you from incurring huge late payment fees and making the whole thing worse.

I am sorry to hear about this. What field is he in? Are there available jobs in your area?

I don't what else to tell different what the posters have told you. I was the same way a little over a year ago. I have no kids or hubby. So, when I lost my job I was screwed. The first thing I did after cussing out the company, was I called all my credit cards/loans and told them what happened, most worked with me. I was fired out Saturday, so first thing Monday I went and enroll in unemployment. Then I did some job searches. The first thing I did every morning until I found a job, was grab a cup of coffee and looked at all the area papers via internet, visit Job Service website,

Thank you for the hugs! I really needed them. I am soooo scared about what is going to happen to us.

We found out the details of his severance package. He gets 11 weeks of pay & benefits. I have been trying to find out but I don't think he is eligble to collect unemployment until that runs out. Does anyone know for sure? I feel better knowing he is getting a severance package.

He said it usually takes between 4-6 months to find a job in his industry. He has been on the phone and his e-mail all morning networking with old collegues. I really really hope he is able to find something soon.

My job is over next month so I will spend the next few weeks cleaning up my resume and get my resume out there too.

I don't know, but I would think he could file for unemployment now, although it may not kick in until after the severance period. But perhaps you could avoid the delay that usually occurs between filing and receiving payments by filing now.

I am really sorry you are going through this. I know for a fact that you can collect unemployment and severance at the same time. HTH
