Ok- I slipped up. Our couch has visible holes in it and the back cushions are actually ripped off and hanging.(All our furniture was my grandparents- it's pretty old!)

DH couldn't take it anymore and said the couch was an embarrassment and stunk too bad and he was looking in the paper for someone else's old couch.(Which is odd for him to want used) I told him if we couldn't stand OUR stinky couch- why would we want someone elses? and that I would buy a new one rather than get used. (We've dealt with lice once before and I'm taking NO chances!)

So $1100 later, a couch, recliner, end table and coffee table will be arriving next week. DH thought I would chicken out because I usually do- I am not an impulse buyer and I usually pick up stuff at the store and put half of it back!

But once I got in the store I wanted the stuff to match, almost everything we own is 20-30 years old and showing it. At least I paid half of it on the spot in cash and got a 5% discount. The rest of it is on a 1 year/same as cash deal. I will pay it off after my GM card is done in March. It will only put me back a month and this furniture will go in the new house, so I can concentrate on putting everything on the downpayment instead of some for furniture.

I know it's a lame excuse-and we agreed we will not get each other anything for Christmas now. I need to take a deep breath now.........

It's okay. I would have done the same thing. I consider a couch a necessity (not necessarily a coffee table though). If you have a committment to pay it off with no interest and you cut down on the 'wants' for christmas, then I think it's just fine. After all, you have to live, right?

But go ahead and keep feeling guilty so you don't go out and accidently buy new bedroom furniture.

Don't feel guilty. It sounds that it was much needed.

Oh I've been there. Two years ago I was saying things like "I don't care if I don't have any furniture in it I just want a home of my own" and "Even if I have 3rd generation hand me down mismatched stuff I won't mind I will be the homeowner" - mmmm hmmm, that was my big mouth then, you should see my lovely furniture in my home now! I got into this brandnew townhome and just couldn't picture all that mismatched tattered furniture in my new home, so off I went all over the place to find the stuff "I wanted" and tried to get it at a decent price. I did pay cash for the dining set but charged a new bed (mine was 10 years old), a couch, two chairs, an ottoman, two end tables, a coffee table, and an armoire for the tv - oh and as long as I'm fessing up here let me just throw in that for some insane reason I purchased all Calvin Klien bedding, I thought I was getting a deal at the time! I did get the couch, chairs, and ottoman at a discount store and the bed at a discount mattress warehouse but the tables and the armoire and that bedding, which I now hate the sheets and the dust ruffle by the way - umm let's just say I may need my head examined!

Oh and the guilt has hung with me over the past year mind you and it probably will for a very long time!

You did need a new couch. I had an old couch, it was getting to be an embarrassment. I also went out and bought a couch and loveseat. You got a good deal for all the furniture.

And you also know exactly how many payments it will take to pay it off. donna
