On Monday night I was laying on the sofa drifting away....drifting away....almost asleep, then my downstairs neighbor came knocking on the door to say water was dripping into his apartment....I checked the water heater, and it was sitting in a big puddle......YIKES!!!!! I was up for most of the night after that cleaning up after it and then waiting on the janitor to come with the replacement the next day. I lost 2 hours of work this week and a night's sleep. A good friend told me I was lucky I didn't have to pay for the replacemnt tank which is true, but I am upset about losing the 2 hours of work.....I couldn't make it up since I am in a class afterwork right now.
So here's the drill......one way or another you have discovered you need a new hot water tank......How would you know this, and are you prepared to pay for a new one? What would you do? Do you have any money left after the last fire drill?

I like to send around $700 to my cc each month,(the minimum due is $130) but when things like this happen- I use that money. We don't have any money in savings right now because we want to focus on paying off a few things and then saving for a new house.
But I consider DH's 401K a savings plan so I guess that's something. Nicki
But if I owned my own home, I would (hopefully) have a house maintanence account. After the last fire drill, I would rather go without a tv than hot water. I would hope I wouldn't take the money for a new tv (or repairs in my case) out of my maintanence account so I should have the money.
Well, we live in post housing (dh is military) so if anything happened to our hot water heater we would just call maintenance and we wouldn't have to pay anything.
YOU ARE SPYING ON ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok, now that that is out of the way....ummm....this is not a drill, this is a REAL emergency...I repeat this is NOT a drill...this is the real thing BECAUSE...guess what happened last Friday night to us??????????
11:00 pm, DH calls me down into the basement - guess what the Water Heater was leaking...guess what, we have a finished basement, guess what, the "closet" that the water heater is in is the same closet that the server for our network is in, guess what, no hot water all day Saturday, DH was going to work on it Sunday after work, got some of the parts - guess what, the valve to turn off the water TO the water tank was stripped, guess what, no hot water all day Sunday.....guess what, DH worked on it all day Monday since he was "closing" that day....let's just say he was *several* hours late to work AND in the meantime he never did get the valve fixed...he went out and got a universal hose so we at least had water (oh yeah, I had NO WATER all day Monday - at least until about 3 pm).
OH...and then the aftermath was the carpet was just stinking up the entire house, I mean it was just nasty when you walked into the house - I told DH that on Tuesday but Wednesday after going to my parents house to get haircuts when we walked back it, it was enough to topple you over (and this was after having windows open, etc...), SO....add the expense of he went out and rented a steam cleaner (but the GOOD news on that one is I had been talking about wanting to do the upstairs carpet recently but it was "one of these days" deals...since we had the carpet cleaner until noon on Thursday, we cleaned the upstairs carpet too!
