When you shop, do you....

tally the prices in your head, if it is only a few purchases? I usually do, but I missed it today. I bought two of the exact same pairs of jeans today...and got charged $5 more for one of them at Kohl's. Of course the lightbulb didn't go on in my head until I was on the way home. Last month, again at Kohl's, they rang up one item twice, and again, I caught it after I had gotten home. ARGHH! But what if I didn't look at the receipts??? It kinda just makes me mad, but it also means twice when i was adding up what I spent, i thought I spent more than I actually did. Good grief!!! Heather

When I shop for clothes, I make them tell me the price of each item as they ring them up - no exceptions.

All my best,

I agree with Danni! And I would go back to the store or call them and see what they will do about the price difference on the same exact item. No reason they should make extra money on you. I don't like those registers now that don't show the price. I also stand at the counter after the purchase and look over my receipt before I leave, that way I make sure that everything rang up correctly. I don't know if anyone else does this, but I stand at the register and re-count my change too. It's annoying to the person behind you and the salesperson, but I work hard for my money and want to make sure my change is correct. I am surprised at how often it is wrong.

deciding to be happy doesn't mean that everything is perfect, but that you had decided to look beyond the imp

I agree about standing at the end of the till and checking the receipt. I know from experience that cashiers in some stores get in trouble if someone who went through their till stands and checks the receipt, so I used to do it outside the door, but I've stopped caring. My rationale is that I've found so many grocery store cashiers that just don't care about their job, and they are usually chatting with the bag boy about last weekend's party, and not paying attention to me...and often there are computer pricing errors too that the cashier wouldn't notice. I've found I've been charged the wrong price alot.

ONE THING I OFTEN DO IS LOOK AT THE DISPLAY ON THE SCALE BEFORE AN ITEM GOES ON IT TO MAKE SURE IT'S AT ZERO. I was a checkout girl for a long time and often the scale isn't at zero. Even if it's only a fraction of a pound over zero, it can cost you a lot more than it should. Last weekend I bought some stuff and I looked at the weights on the receipts and the items just didn't feel that heavy. So that's one other thing to check.

And as for clothes, I don't buy that much at all for quite awhile, and even if it's at the thrift store, I check the price of each item that they ring in, or I simply ask them the price of each item. It's my money and I don't have much, so it's my responsibility to make sure I'm not getting charged too much.

It's funny what's been said about checkout register displays that don't face the customer anymore. Here the trend is very strongly towards large flat panel computer screens with big fonts that prominently face the customer. Even many of the small independent low-budget grocery stores have done this so you can watch the prices of each item ring up.

I was just going to say that our grocery store practically has the screen so everyone can see, including the customer behind you, which I don't like since it also includes how you pay, etc....

Now dept. stores are different but our Kohl's always tells me the price when it rings up on sale but I can usually see it on the register.

I know I try to watch as things are scanned, etc... but sometimes you miss.

No, I don't tally things up in my head. I go into a sort of shopping 'blackout', where half the time I don't even remember what I've purchased. I get to the register, and the cashier rings everything up, turns to me, says the total but I don't hear it, I swipe my card and punch in my passcode for debit, take my goods and go.

And *that's* why I don't go to Malls! ha ha!!

Having done mystery shopping at one time I also learned that many stores will give you the item for free or at least give you the over charge plus a % if you catch it. Find out the policy for each store BEFORE you shop. Often times they will not do it unless you mention it. It never hurts to be an informed shopper.
