Hi! Yes, I'm giving you a fire drill before Christmas!
When you are reading this fire drill, you are leaving a business meeting or a holiday party, and you have discovered that someone has taken your warmest winter coat with them (and we hope this has happened by mistake!).....You make it home by borrowing a winter coat from your host, but will you be able to replace the coat you lost or do you have another one you can wear? With this being a time of year where money is tight, will you have to do some creative accounting to get another coat, or do you have other sources to get a coat? Can you just run out and get another one, or will you have to wait and make do? Do you already have another coat at home you can wear?
For friends in warmer climates, would it be a disaster to lose rain gear or some other protective clothing this time of year?
A lot of times I see coat drives at this time of year, and I think how difficult it must be to not have a warm coat.
Please share!

Assuming it was my long dress coat with the fur collar, I'd need to replace it, and I'd do it right away, as I wear it every day to work. It would go on Amex and I'd figure out how to pay for it next month.
If it really were my *warmest* winter coat - the long down coat or the Lands' End parka - I'd do without the long down coat, which I rarely need, though I'd try to replace the parka asap - I don't have anything else to wear with jeans when it's 25 degrees or colder.
Now if someone would steal my "not-so-cold weather" pants jacket, I'd be thrilled - then I could justify getting a new one!

Well we are in Georgia but it does get chilly here. Right now we are in the 20's. If it were my coat that got lost or stolen I would have to make due with a combonation of sweatshirts, pullovers, hoodies, and lightweight jackets. I only have one coat. My husband doesn't have any because he is a big fellow and doesn't chill easily. We does have some lightweight jackets. DeLainey my almost 2 year old has several coats. I try to buy them at the end of the season and sometimes the price is soooo incredibly good I buy several in different sizes. (Last year I found some coats at walmart for $5 and one at Toys R us for $7.99!) She might look a little funny in the 3T coat I have put up because it would be so big but she would be snuggly.

Well, I have two good, very warm coats, so it would not constitute an immediate emergency for me. I have a long, wool, black dress coat (purchased at a yard sale for $4) for dressy occasions and outings; and a medium-length slightly-too-large water-resistant down coat (given by a friend who was cleaning out her closets) for every-day wear and playing in the snow. I would be sad to lose either one, but if it were to happen, I would wear the other one until I found another deal similar to these (i.e., either free or cheap at a yard sale).
This reminds me that I have some older coats in my closet (also received either free or super cheap and eventually upgraded--as good deals presented themselves--into the two coats I now wear regularly) that I want to donate to a women's shelter. I suppose if the emergency were to happen now, I might resort back to one of these older coats, but they will only be in my closet until I can find a good new home for them.
Great question!

Well...my first thought was "I have my dress coat" but if I was at a holiday party - I would probably be wearing my dress coat - so the answer would be, I will be fine, I have my regular every day coat.
Now, if BOTH of those were taken, I'd be in serious trouble.....guess it would have to be sweaters with windbreakers over top.
But if I really had to I would probably charge it because I would consider it a necessity and deal with it later.

I'd be devastated if someone took my long black dress coat - but not because of not having any jacket if that one's gone. I'd simply do what I used to do for years: Pile on layers. And waitr for winter to go and then search the shops fopr a good but not too expensive replacement :-)

Yes! I can do this! :-D A few weeks, I don't think I would have, but DH and I have been putting everything into Quicken, and now we're $900 ahead this month. So yes, I could buy a winter coat, but I would shop around for a good deal if I could. :-D
